A hybrid watermark insertion method includes the steps of dividing the digital image into a low frequency region and a high frequency region using an edge map of the digital image; inserting a watermark into the low frequency region of the image by employing a watermarking method using a human visual system (HVS); and inserting the watermark into the high frequency region of the image by employing a quantization index modulation (QIM) method. A hybrid watermark extraction method includes the steps of estimating a reference value used when inserting a watermark, and searching a maximum value of correlation coefficients in an image of the watermark image while changing the estimated reference value within a designated range, to thereby find out the watermark insertion method. Accordingly, the watermark insertion method can be easily identified, thereby enabling the watermark extraction in a more readily manner.

A method for inserting and extracting a fingerprint based on a wavelet is disclosed. The method includes: a) decomposing an original image into a first sub-band image having low frequency band columns and rows, a second sub-band image having high frequency band columns and low frequency band rows, a third sub-band image having low frequency band columns and high frequency band rows and a fourth sub-band image having high frequency band columns and rows by performing an n-level discrete wavelet transformation on an original image; b) obtaining a human visual system model from the first sub-band image; c) generating an N×N fingerprint basic block by performing a message modulation on a multi-bit fingerprint signal with a security key and adding a synch pattern to the modulated signal; d) repeatedly inserting the fingerprint basic block in to the second, the third and the fourth sub-band images with reference to the human visual system model; and e) generating a fingerprint inserted image by performing an inverse discrete wavelet transformation on the first sub-band image and the fingerprint basic block inserted second, third and fourth sub-band images.

The present invention relates to a method for blindly embedding and extracting a watermark by using wavelet transform and a human visual system (HVS) model, which obtains both robustness and invisibility by applying the HVS model of NVF or JND imitating a human visual system to a middle frequency band for wavelet transformation and using a quantization step determined adaptively according to the importance of wavelet coefficient. A method according to the present invention includes the steps of: decomposing an original image by a wavelet and selecting a middle frequency band as a watermark embedment area; obtaining an HVS model having a human visual recognition information at each embedding position; determining the importance of the coefficient for each embedding position, and adaptively determining a quantization step for each embedment location by using the importance and the HVS model; quantizing each pair of embedment area by the quantization step and variably embedding a watermark sequence into a middle frequency band according to a value of the watermark; and performing inverse wavelet transform on an overall area into which the watermark sequence is embedded, and generating a watermarked image.
