The control system for a linear solenoid valve controls output of an oil pressure according to a current value to be fed to the linear solenoid which operates the linear solenoid valve. A solenoid current monitor detects the current value fed to the linear solenoid and an IG voltage monitor detects the voltage level of the battery. A linear solenoid current value setting unit sets a target current value according to a target oil pressure level and a duty ratio setting unit sets a duty ratio for applying the battery voltage to the linear solenoid on the basis of signals coming from the current monitor, the voltage monitor and the current value setting unit. A solenoid driver applies the battery voltage to the linear solenoid for a predetermined period in accordance with the duty ratio set by the duty ratio setting unit. The duty ratio setting unit, in turn, includes: a feedback correction unit for feedback correction of the duty ratio, in accordance with the difference between the current value detected by the monitor and the target current value set by the current value setting unit, so that the current value fed to the linear solenoid approaches the target current value; and a voltage correction unit for further correcting the duty ratio, as previously corrected by the feedback correction unit, on the basis of the voltage level of the battery, as detected by the voltage monitor.

If the calculated actual gear ratio is coincided with the formal gear ratio, it is determined that the state is normal, while if they are not coincided with each other, it is determined that the T/M is in a failure state. As a result of this, failure detection of the T/M is performed. Therefore, in a case when the T/M is in a failure state, a driver can take a measure, for exmple, by performing an emergency control. Furthermore, the occurrence of the failure can be displayed by a detected failure displaying device so that the driver can take a measure such as a repair.

If the result of the comparison is that the shift time does not fall within an allowable range of standard values, a signal outputted to a linear solenoid is varied in such a manner that the shift time will be held with the range of the standard values. Accordingly, actual shift time while a vehicle is traveling is constantly fed back and controlled so as to attain an optimum shift time. Therefore, even if a change in the shift time is brought about by a change in oil temperature in the transmission or by aging of friction elements or the like, the shift time can be corrected to an optimum value to improve shift sensation as well as the durability of the friction elements.

After the vehicle has started off in the higher gear following use of the switch, the transmission switches over to the ordinary travel mode automatically as vehicle velocity rises. In a case where the engine is turned off and then restarted, the transmission switches over to the ordinary travel mode automatically. This eliminates any inconvenience that might be caused by forgetting to operate the switch prior to the restarting of the engine.

If the ratio of the difference between the gear ratio of the transmission (measured value) and a predetermined gear ratio after the gearshift (theoretical value) to the latter gear ratio after the gearshift becomes smaller than a predetermined value, the end of gearshift is decided. A set level by which the torque of the engine should be reduced during the period between the start and end of the gearshift is determined by reading reduction data previously set with respect to the throttle opening and the type of gearshift. The torque output from the engine is reduced on the basis of the reduction data by controlling the ignition timing retardation angle or the fuel injection rate.

To prevent wheel spinning in reverse gear on a slippery road surface the electronic control system of the present invention transmits signals representing the states of a reverse range detecting switch and a winter mode switch to a microcomputer, and output signals from the microcomputer are transmitted to an engine control computer which in turn, sends ignition period delay angle signals to the spark timing controller, and the output torque of the engine is thereby reduced. When the output torque of the engine is reduced, the driving power to the wheels is decreased and slippage is reduced in reverse start on a low coefficent of fuction .mu. path.
