摘要: A bearing including a backing formed of a steel material, a lining formed of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, and a diffusion barrier layer disposed between the backing and the lining is provided. The diffusion barrier layer is formed of nickel or a nickel alloy and has a thickness ranging from 1 micron to 100 microns. The bearing is typically formed by cladding the lining or plating the steel backing with the diffusion barrier layer, bonding the lining and the backing with the diffusion barrier layer between, heating to a temperature of at least 400° C., and forming the bearing into a shape after or before the heating step.

摘要: A piston capable of operating at a high temperature and consequently contributing to a high in-cylinder temperature, as well as reducing engine oil temperature, when used in an internal combustion engine, is provided. The piston includes an upper portion and a lower portion welded together to present a cooling gallery therebetween. The cooling gallery extends circumferentially around a center axis of the piston and is spaced the center axis. A partition is located in the cooing gallery and extends from one inner surface to another inner surface of the cooling gallery. The partition extends circumferentially around the center axis, and divides the cooling gallery into at least a first gallery portion and a second gallery portion. The partition can be formed as one piece with the upper portion or the lower portion. Alternatively, the partition can be formed as a separate piece from the upper portion and the lower portion.

摘要: A steel piston with a bushing applied to pin bore surfaces by laser cladding or laser additive manufacturing is provided. The bushing is formed of metal, such as bronze, and metallurgically bonded to the steel of the piston. Thus, the bushing cannot fail by rotating relative to pin bore surfaces. The bushing has a porosity ranging from 0.05% to 5%, based on the total volume of the bushing, and a thickness ranging from 0.07 mm to 6 mm. Since the metal is applied directly to the steel by laser cladding or laser additive manufacturing, the overall size of the piston is reduced, compared to typical pistons with a separate steel backed bushing, and the possibility of bushing rotation is avoided. The bushing also provides scuffing resistance and increased unit load capacity of the pin bore.

摘要: A corona ignition assembly comprising a plurality of different insulators disposed between an ignition coil assembly and firing end assembly is provided. A high voltage center electrode extends longitudinally between an igniter central electrode and the ignition coil assembly. A high voltage insulator formed of a fluoropolymer surrounds the high voltage center electrode, and a firing end insulator formed of alumina surrounds the igniter central electrode. According to one embodiment, a glue formed of a compliant and insulating material, such as a silicon-based material, forms a seal between the high voltage insulator and the firing end insulator. According to another embodiment, a dielectric compliant insulator is disposed between the high voltage insulator and the ignition coil assembly, and the glue forms a seal therebetween. The glue fills air gaps to prevent unwanted corona discharge, and thus extends the life of the materials and directs energy to the firing end.

The half bead is between the full bead and the free edge. The half bead extends in a first axial direction to a plateau portion and the full bead extends in a second axial direction opposite the first axial direction to a peak.

摘要: A corona igniter assembly including an ignition coil assembly, a firing end assembly, and a dielectric compliant member is provided. The dielectric compliant member is compressed between a high voltage insulator of the ignition coil assembly and a ceramic insulator of the firing end assembly. During assembly of the corona igniter assembly, the dielectric compliant member pushes air outwards and forms a hermetic seal between the high voltage insulator and the ceramic insulation. The dielectric compliant member can have a rounded upper surface, which may improve the hermetic seal. Alternatively, or in addition to the rounded surface on the dielectric compliant member, the lower surface of the high voltage insulator can be rounded to push air outwards during assembly and provide a hermetic seal.

摘要: A method of coating all surfaces of a plurality of piston rings in a single run by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process is provided. The method can include providing a coil formed of an iron-based material; heating the coil; and depositing a coating on all surfaces of the coil during a single continuous period of time, without having to move the coil during the CVD process. The coil is maintained in a fixed position during the depositing step. The method next includes splitting the coil into a plurality of separate coated piston rings. Alternatively, the method can include providing a plurality of stacked keystone piston ring bodies; and disposing a cylinder around the stack to maintain the keystone piston ring bodies in position while depositing the CVD coating on all surfaces of the keystone piston ring bodies during the single coating run.

摘要: A method of manufacturing a spark plug (20) for being threaded into a cylinder head (28) of an internal combustion engine is provided. The spark plug (20) includes a shell (24) with threads (26) disposed at a predetermined rotational position (a) relative to a shell outer surface (64) and ground electrode (34). The position of the threads (26) relative to the ground electrode (34) places the ground electrode (34) in a desired position in the combustion chamber (22) and relative to components of the engine, thus allowing the ground electrode (34) to provide a robust and reliable ignition. When multiple spark plugs (20) are formed, the threads (26) in each of the shells (24) are repeatedly and accurately formed at the predetermined rotational position (α) by locating the ground electrode (34), threads (26), and dies (76) of a thread forming apparatus (102) in specific locations.

摘要: A sliding element, such as a piston ring, including a substrate, base coating, and relatively thin sliding coating is provided. The base coating is typically applied to a running surface of the substrate by PVD, CVD, galvanic deposition, electrodeposition, or a thermal spray process. The sliding coating includes a polymer matrix and hard particles disposed throughout the matrix. The sliding coating is applied to the base coating when the base coating is still in its as-applied condition and has a surface roughness of at least 4.0 μm. During use of the sliding element, the thin sliding coating acts as a sacrificial run-in layer. In addition, as the polymer matrix of the sliding coating wears away, the hard particles polish the rough surface of the base coating. Thus, polishing or lapping of the as-applied base coating prior to use of the sliding element is not required.

摘要: A robust engine assembly having reduced weight and efficient cooling, without an increase in fuel consumption or carbon dioxide emissions, is provided. The engine assembly includes a double-wall cylinder liner clamped between a cylinder head and a crankcase. A manifold is disposed along a portion of the cylinder liner and includes fluid ports aligned with fluid ports of the cylinder liner to convey cooling fluid to a cooling chamber located between the walls of the cylinder liner. For example, the manifold can be a low-loss hydraulic manifold cast integral with the crankcase. Tie rods connect the cylinder head to the crankcase to clamp the cylinder liner in position. Alternatively, the tie rods can be connected to a main bearing cradle located beneath the crankcase. No attachment features extend into the walls of the cylinder liner, which is especially advantageous when the cylinder liner is formed of aluminum.
