Abstract: A phacoemulsification system, comprising: a handpiece comprising a piezoelectric element and a needle, the needle configured to be inserted into an eye and to be vibrated by the piezoelectric element to emulsify a lens of the eye; an irrigation module configured to supply a flow of irrigation fluid into the eye; an aspiration module configured for removing material from the eye; circuitry configured to determine whether at least a distal tip of the needle is inside the eye or is outside the eye; and a processor, which is configured to receive a determination from the circuitry as to whether the distal tip of the needle is inside or outside the eye, and to control operation of at least the irrigation module according to the determination.

Abstract: A system for ophthalmic surgery on an eye includes: a pulsed laser which produces a treatment beam; an OCT imaging assembly capable of creating a continuous depth profile of the eye; an optical scanning system configured to position a focal zone of the treatment beam to a targeted location in three dimensions in one or more floaters in the posterior pole. The system also includes one or more controllers programmed to automatically scan tissues of the patient's eye with the imaging assembly; identify one or more boundaries of the one or more floaters based at least in part on the image data; iii. identify one or more treatment regions based upon the boundaries; and operate the optical scanning system with the pulsed laser to produce a treatment beam directed in a pattern based on the one or more treatment regions.

Abstract: A system for therapy of the eye by treating tissue with therapeutic radiation using nonlinear interaction. A laser device is provided, which delivers the therapeutic radiation. The therapeutic radiation is focussed by a focussing device in an image field, and xy scanners and z scanners shift the focus laterally and longitudinally within a treatment volume. The therapeutic radiation is either a second short pulse radiation or a first short pulse radiation, each of which have a spectral centroid within a wavelength range defined by the short pulse properties. The system is particularly corrected with regard to longitudinal chromatic aberrations and lateral chromatic aberrations such that the spectral characteristic curves of the two aberrations each have a local extreme within the wavelength ranges, and a certain tolerance within the wavelength ranges is not exceeded, therefore the characteristic curves are very shallow.

Abstract: A device insertion tool can include a body and a light redirecting structure. The body can extend along a central longitudinal axis between forward and aft ends. The body can include a device mount portion at the forward end to hold an optic and a handle portion at the aft end configured to be held. The body can be inserted into an anterior chamber of the eye with the optic mounted on the device mount portion at the forward end. The light redirecting structure can be engaged with the body between the forward and aft ends. The light redirecting structure can be one of at least one mirror and at least one prism. The light redirecting structure can be directed at the forward end and can be configured to redirect light traveling from the forward end toward the aft end transverse to the central longitudinal axis.

Abstract: A method of treating a lens of a patient's eye includes generating a light beam, deflecting the light beam using a scanner to form a treatment pattern of the light beam, delivering the treatment pattern to the lens of a patient's eye to create a plurality of cuts in the lens in the form of the treatment pattern to break the lens up into a plurality of pieces, and removing the lens pieces from the patient's eye. The lens pieces can then be mechanically removed. The light beam can be used to create larger segmenting cuts into the lens, as well as smaller softening cuts that soften the lens for easier removal.

Abstract: A system and method for inserting an intraocular lens in a patient's eye includes a light source for generating a light beam, a scanner for deflecting the light beam to form an enclosed treatment pattern that includes a registration feature, and a delivery system for delivering the enclosed treatment pattern to target tissue in the patient's eye to form an enclosed incision therein having the registration feature. An intraocular lens is placed within the enclosed incision, wherein the intraocular lens has a registration feature that engages with the registration feature of the enclosed incision. Alternately, the scanner can make a separate registration incision for a post that is connected to the intraocular lens via a strut member.

Abstract: Some embodiments disclosed here provide for a method fragmenting a cataractous lens of a patient's eye using an ultra-short pulsed laser. The method can include determining, within a lens of a patient's eye, a high NA zone where a cone angle of a laser beam with a high numerical aperture is not shadowed by the iris, and a low NA zone radially closer to the iris where the cone angle of the laser beam with a low numerical aperture is not shadowed by the iris. Laser lens fragmentation is accomplished by delivering the laser beam with the high numerical aperture to the high NA zone, and the laser beam with the low numerical aperture to the low NA zone. This can result in a more effective fragmentation of a nucleus of the lens without exposing the retina to radiation above safety standards.
