摘要: A device for removing fluid from a first bodily cavity and for directing that fluid into a second bodily cavity while avoiding risks of infection and, in one embodiment, excessive dehydration of the first bodily cavity. The device includes an uptake tube having a proximal end in fluid communication with the first bodily cavity and a distal end in fluid communication with a pump, and an outflow tube having a proximal end in fluid communication with the pump and a distal end in fluid communication with the second bodily cavity. The distal end of the uptake tube may be coupled to a reservoir configured to expand upon ingression of fluid into the reservoir and to contract upon removal of fluid due to a negative pressure provided by the pump.

摘要: An ascites shunt is described in the form of an implantable, anti-reflux, fluid displacement, compression pump-catheter system. The system includes a double chambered multi-micro-orifice ascites collection device, an anti-reflux, anti-backdiffusion tubular compression pump, and an anti-reflux, anti-backdiffusion, non-thrombogenic catheter, all connected in series by flexible tubing. The shunt is used to transfer fluid from the peritoneum to a blood vessel to prevent accumulation of fluid within the peritoneal cavity. The pump and intravascular catheter include check valve tips of particular design to prevent both reflux and diffusion of blood components into the system.

摘要: A method for the transfer of body fluid which accumulates in the peritoneal cavity into the vascular system is disclosed. This accumulation occurs most frequently with patients suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and constitutes a lethal complication. An implant device is disclosed which comprises a plastic chamber and connecting tubing, said chamber containing unique valve structure comprising a flexible diaphragm seated on a shoulder and attached to this diaphragm a connector bar which is attached at its other end to the center plate of a structure composed of several lateral silicone rubber struts which radiate out from the center plate to connect to a circular peripheral ring. The circular peripheral ring is anchored fixedly to the lateral wall of the valve housing by compression between two threaded connectors of plastic also. These rubber struts place pressure constantly on the diaphragm pulling it toward the shoulder which closes the valve. The diaphragm member is thus fixed to the side wall of the valve housing by the elastomeric strut members. The seat of the diaphragm valve is adjustable and hence it can control the fluid pressure required to open the valve.

摘要: An abdominal cavity-vein shunt stent provided for transporting ascites accumulated in the abdominal cavity of a patient to a vascular system, includes: a stent body which extends cylindrically long and which has one end disposed in the intrahepatic vein, and the other end piercing the liver parenchyma and disposed in the abdominal cavity; and a one-way valve which is disposed in the stent body, which is opened to drain ascites into the intrahepatic vein when a differential pressure obtained by subtracting the pressure of the intrahepatic vein from the pressure in the abdominal cavity is not lower than a predetermined value, and which is closed when the differential pressure is lower than the predetermined value.

摘要: The present invention features devices that can be used to extract ascites and other fluids from the body with a minimally invasive procedure and, if desired, can also be used to flush the cavity (e.g., the abdominal cavity) from which the fluids were removed. The devices also permit characterization of the fluids in that a surgeon or other health care provider can conveniently obtain a sample of the fluids to assess their composition. The amount of fluid removed from a cavity can also be determined. While the present devices and procedures are not limited to those that bring about any particular physiological response, we believe they will help maintain blood flow and prevent the accumulation of toxins and inflammatory cytokines in bodily cavities, such as the abdominal cavity. We may refer to the devices of the invention as MIST, as they allow for minimally invasive suction and treatment.
