A drainless reverse osmosis (RO) water purification system provides relatively pure water for on-demand dispensing, while recycling brine to a domestic hot water system. The drainless purification system includes a pre-filter catalyst cartridge for removing chlorine-based contaminants from a tap water supply upstream from an RO membrane. The catalyst is regularly refreshed by a high through-flow of water to a conventional cold water dispense faucet, thereby significantly prolonging the service life of the RO membrane. The RO membrane is incorporated into a multi-cartridge unit adapted for facilitated slide-out removal and replacement as needed. A control valve recycles brine from the RO membrane to the hot water system during pure water production, and recirculates tap water through the RO membrane when a pure water reservoir is substantially filled. The multi-cartridge unit may further include an air filtration system for providing a flow of filtered air.

An apparatus for filtering water has an interface and a filtration/purification canister removably mountable onto the interface. Connecting the canister to the interface automatically opens a check valve in the interface to permit water to flow from the interface into and through the canister, and then back to and through the interface to an outlet port. Disconnecting the canister from the interface automatically closes the check valve, stopping the flow of water. The invention is a granular media filter for in-line liquid applications that allows media as fine as 44 micron to be used to increase the removal of contaminants from the liquid with adequate flows consisting of a specific arrangement. A flow distributor has a non-woven fiber web welded to it; followed by a mixture of fine particle media (finer than 20×50 mesh); followed by a compressible chlorine resistant open cell polyurethane foam, then a 5 micron rated meltblown fiber tube attached to the outlet end by melt adhesive on one end and closed with a plastic plug on the other end. The foam can be either polyurethane or polyolefin, and it can be either open cell foam, or reticulated and open cell foam. A preferred embodiment includes within the fine particle media 10% by weight of flow-enhancing antimicrobial plastic pellets, about 4-5 mm in diameter and having an aspect ratio of 2-3, the pellets encapsulating an antimicrobial additive.
