In a method of controlling the roll gap of a cold rolling mill of the class wherein the rolling load is first estimated and then the roll gap is calculated, the deformation resistance of the material being rolled is determined in accordance with a constant determined by the reduction, the strain rate, and the temperature and quality of the strip being rolled; the exit strip temperature is determined by taking into consideration the reduction and the characteristics of the rolling mill; the mean deformation resistance of the strip is determined from the deformation resistance and the exit strip temperature; the rolling pressure is calculated in accordance with the equation as hereinbelow defined for determining the rolling pressure by using the mean deformation resistance; and then the roll gap is determined and controlled in accordance with the equation of a gauge meter as hereinbelow defined.

Control system for cold rolling mills to improve sheet metal thickness uniformity. Sensors monitor the state of the cold rolling mill by measuring (i) roll eccentricity, (ii) roll slips during mill operation, (iii) mill disturbances from roll speed or roll force manifestations, and (iv) unknown disturbances referred to as process noise. The controller analyzes data from sensors to compensate. Data collected during the mill operation by the sensors are delayed in reaching the controller. This communication delay is accounted for by using a filter. Since an objective of the controller software is dynamic identification of eccentricity of the back up rolls, which is non-linear by nature, an Extended Kalman Filter may be used.

A Steckel mill has a reversing unit for rolling a rolled product and winding furnaces arranged on the entrance side and exit side of the reversing unit. When rolling the rolled product in a region of a head of the rolled product, a target thickness of the rolled product is ignored, while measuring a current thickness and/or a hardness of the rolled product and comparing this with a setpoint value. One the measured variable reaches or is below the setpoint value, the reversing unit is operated with a view to achieving the target thickness of the rolled product. The Steckel mill is operated to allow for rolling of a cold, non-rollable piece of the rolled product, so that malfunctions are avoided and the usable part of the rolled product is as large as possible.

A rolling mill stand, including a housing for supporting a pair of opposed rolls for reducing the thickness of a workpiece passed therebetween and an apparatus for adjusting the gap between the rolls, has associated therewith a scheme for controlling the apparatus for adjusting the gap in response to combined results of a first signal representing the force occasioned by the workpiece between the rolls and a second signal representing the strain established in the housing as a result of the workpiece between the rolls.
