Mill control system and method for metal strip rolling controlled in response to a sequence of controller scans are provided. A sensor suite is coupled to sense a plurality of parameters regarding the strip rolling. A model responsive to the sensed parameters is configured to estimate per scan at least one matrix based on the sensed parameters and indicative of state conditions of the strip rolling. A controller includes an inner control loop configured to effect a control law to generate a control vector per scan. The inner control loop may be configured to have dynamic characteristics, which remain substantially the same for each scan of the controller. The dynamic characteristics of the inner control loop are effective to determine a pointwise online control solution based on the matrix indicative of the state conditions of the strip rolling, without having to compute a Riccati control solution per scan.

Roll gaps of the respective stands are each controlled by thickness control units. Interstand mass flow variations are each controlled by mass flow control units. Looper heights are controlled by looper height control units. Further, interstand tensions are controlled by looper tension control units. If no looper is provided, the interstand tensions are controlled by looperless control units. A flying thickness change control unit tracks a connecting point. The flying thickness change control unit switches over looper tension control and looperless control and changes a reference tension and a reference looper angle so that tensile and flexural forces are not applied to this connecting point.

This disclosure relates to a process for the regulation of the thickness of a flat product such as a strip, sheet or plate, being rolled in a hot tandem rolling mill, and the corresponding regulation device for carrying out the process. Regarding each stand of the rolling mill on which the adjustment is being performed, a constant rolling pressure is maintained, the gap is measured, the deviation between the measured gap and a set value corresponding to a desired thickness of the product is determined, and the necessary correction of the value of the tensile force applied on the product between the stand under consideration and the upstream stand in order to bring the gap back to its set value is determined. Finally, this correction of the tensile force between the stand under consideration and the upstream stand is performed.

Apparatus for automatic control of the fill dimension of a product formed in a rolling mill by sensing the fill dimension of the finished product and comparing this value to a predetermined reference value to form a resultant error signal. This resultant error signal modifies the height of loops between successive stands of the mill to vary the product fill dimension. The apparatus includes provision for increasing the gain if successive errors of fill dimension in the same direction are sensed and for decreasing the gain if successive errors in the opposite directions are sensed.
