Corrugated paperboard box blanks are formed with corner fold lines defined by a colinear slit and score. The score deflects one slit edge of the liner out of the plane of the blank such that, when a subsequent lateral fold is made on the line, one slit edge tucks consistently under the other along the full length of the fold line. The resultant box blanks fold more squarely than prior art folded boxes with no significant loss in the compressive strength of the box.

An improved triple wall corrugated paper board fold construction is formed by joining a single face web with a nonadhered band of the medium to a contiguous liner of another one of the single face webs, slitting and removing a portion of the nonadhered band along a narrow bending area, and removing the slit strip to leave a bending groove formed with one or more score lines in the material underlying the groove, as the board continuously moves along a path of travel.
Abstract:
In the production of hinge lid packs with rounded longitudinal edges, collars (10) which are present in this type of pack are preshaped in the region of longitudinal edges (13) which are also rounded. For this purpose, a scoring (embossed strip 21, 22) which extends in the longitudinal direction is applied to a web of material (14). Thereafter, the collars (10) are severed from the web of material (14) and are preshaped in the region of the longitudinal edges (13) which are to be formed. The collars (10) which have been prepared in this way can be placed on a cigarette block and be further processed in the conventional manner.
Abstract:
A method of forming one or more score lines or bands of weakness in a web formed of nonwoven thermoplastic fibers requires the application of sufficient energy such as ultrasonic energy to narrow bands of the web to change the fibers to a film. An envelope formed of tough nonwoven thermoplastic fibers for use in shipping documents may be formed with an easy open device by forming score lines in the envelope and the envelope and, if necessary, may be reinforced in the area of the score lines by a strip of oriented pressure-sensitive adhesive reinforcing tape applied over the bands and adjacent surfaces of the envelope on the interior side of the envelope and a tear tape may be applied to the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape in the area between the bands to afford means for tearing the envelope at the bands. Cuts are conveniently formed at the ends of the tape and bands to increase the ease of opening.
Abstract:
A resilient scoring rule for a rotary cutting die produces a creased or indented line in cardboard or paperboard along which line the board is subsequently folded when formed into a final product, such as a container. The scoring rule has a longitudinally extending, centrally disposed projecting web and opposed, cantilevered, symmetrical inwardly directed left and right ears having ends generally adjacent the central web. A pair of outwardly extending flanges raise the edge adjacent regions of the rule off the cutting die surface and function as mounting features which cooperate with staples or other retaining devices. An alternate embodiment scoring rule includes a pair of center projections or ribs flanked by a pair of cantilevered ears.

A method of making corrugated board having at least one fold region includes the steps of securing at least two sheets of paper liner in complementary facing engagement to create a first multi-layer liner. A first set of ridges of a first corrugated paper medium is secured to the first multi-layer composite liner to create a first single-face web. At least two sheets of paper liner are secured in complementary facing engagement to create a second multi-layer composite liner. A first set of ridges of a second corrugated paper medium is secured to the second multi-layer composite liner to create a second single-face web. A selected portion of the second corrugated paper medium is compressed to create an area to be bent. A second set of ridges of the first corrugated paper medium is secured to the second multi-layer composite liner. Adhesive is applied to the second set of ridges of the second corrugated paper medium, except for the compressed selected portion. A third liner is secured to a second set of ridges in the second corrugated paper medium such that the selected portion of the second corrugated paper medium is spaced from the third liner. The first multi-layer composite liner, the first corrugated paper medium, the second multi-layer composite liner and at least part of the selected portion of the second corrugated paper medium are cut along two lines to form a cutout area which is aligned with the bend area. The cutout area is then removed from the corrugated board using a vacuum process.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for forming a fold construction in a triple wall corrugated paper board comprises a pair of spaced a part main frame plates having four support plates connected therebetween in a direction which is transverse to a feed direction for the paper board. A pair of shaft carrier plates which have linear bearings thereon, are mounted for sliding movement to the support shafts between the frame plates. Spreader tubes are engaged around the support shafts for maintaining a selected and accurate distance between the carrier plates. Upper and lower shafts are rotatably mounted between the carrier plates and carry knives, scoring members or other fold forming elements for scoring or cutting the paper board to form segments of the fold construction. A table is fixed between the carrier plates that cooperates with a hold down roller which is rotatably mounted between the plates, to hold the paper board down and prevent curling or warping as the fold construction is formed.
Abstract:
A rotary die-cutting apparatus having cylindrical rollers mounted for rotation on spaced parallel axles. Die plates are mounted on the rollers in tight surface-to-surface contact with the outside surfaces thereof. Each roller has a body with a generally cylindrical outside surface and two longitudinal channels formed therein. The die plates are formed as thin flexible sheets of metal having their ends welded to one of the bars for mounting the sheets on the outside surface of the rollers. A wedge-shaped bar is slideably mounted in the other channel. After the ends of the die plate are welded to the weld bar in butting relation, the die plate is mounted on the roller with the wedge bar removed from its associated channel. After the plate is mounted on the roller, the wedge bar is slid into the channel and gradually forced against the die plate to bring it into surface-to-surface contact with the roller.

A method of forming a skived edge on the inside panel of a thermoplastic coated paperboard container, in part while the container is part of a web or sheet of paperboard material, and in part on individual blanks after being cut from the web or sheet. More specifically, a partial depth cut and an adjacent score line are formed on a carton converting machine providing a precise location for subsequently removing material and folding the edge of a blank on a side seam sealing machine.
Abstract:
A device for grooving continuously-fed flat workpieces to form fold lines, including a slotted disc with a circumferential groove into which groove the circular edge of a grooving disc penetrates, which together with the slotted disc constitutes the grooving tool. A clamp rollers which runs off of a cylindrical section of the slotted disc prevents the free outer areas of the workpiece from being pulled into the operating grooving tool. In order to decrease structural expenditure, the clamp roller includes a cylindrical disc adjoining the grooving disc which rotates at the same rate of revolutions as the grooving disc.
