    摘要: A mailing system including a postage meter adaptable to either a high-speed mailing machine capable of parallel postal value selection or a low-speed mailing machine capable of serial value selection is disclosed. The postage meter includes a print drum with printing value members. A rod extends outwardly from the drum. The rod contains linear racks that are axially located above the horizontal centerline of the rod. The linear racks interact with the value members to provide the proper value setting. Attached to the postage meter are a plurality of cross-over shafts with pinion gears. The gears engage the racks to facilitate value selection. In the high-speed mailing machine, a series of drive members engage the shafts. Apparatus within the high-speed mailing machine causes the shafts to rotate in a parallel fashion to allow for postal value selection to facilitate postal printing. In the low-speed mailing machine, one drive member engages on e shaft of the postage meter. Apparatus within the low-speed mailing machine causes the pinion gear to engage a rack to provide the proper print value. The apparatus in the low-speed machine also causes the drum member to rotate so that the other racks can be serially acted upon by that shaft-pinion gear arrangement to provide the proper postal value to facilitate postal printing. In accordance with this embodiment, a locking device is utilized to prevent inadvertent movement of the adjacent rack members when one rack is being adjusted.

    摘要: Apparatus for printing tickets on an elongated web or thin, flexible sheet material comprising means for controllably advancing said web across a printing station. A printing assembly is provided at said station comprising a primary drum mounted for rotation about an axis transversely of and spaced parallel to said web and a plurality of printing indicia are circumferentially spaced on at least a portion of the periphery of said drum. A secondary drum is mounted on the primary drum for rotation relative thereto about a secondary axis parallel and radially outwardly of the first mentioned axis, and a plurality of printing indicia are circumferentially spaced around at least a portion of the periphery of the secondary drum. Indexing means is provided for rotating the secondary drum relative to the primary drum to position a selected indicia on the former adjacent a selected indicia on the periphery of the latter. Primary indexing means is provided for rotating said printing drum to place any selected indicia on the drum into the printing position, and print hammer means, swingable about an axis parallel to the primary axis from a rest position to a printing position, is provided for urging the web into momentary printing contact against selected indicia on either drum.

    摘要: A printwheel detent disengaging mechanism enables low-torque high-speed automatic printwheel setting. In the engaged position spring-loaded ball in a rotatable shaft bears on a detent ball disposed in a bore in a sleeve surrounding the shaft to cam the detent ball into detent vees of the printwheel. When the shaft is rotated so that the spring-laded ball no longer bears on the detent ball, the detent force is removed and low torque printwheel setting may be accomplished. When setting is completed, the shaft is rotated back into position where the spring-loaded ball bears on the detent ball.

    摘要: An offset press is provided with two printing units, the first of which is a typical offset unit and the second of which is adapted to effect number printing, relief printing or perforation or the like. The second printing unit is provided with a printing cylinder, a paper ejection cylinder and first and second delivery cylinders whose axes are positioned at the four corners of a square. In this manner, the paper from the first printing unit can be guided to the paper ejection cylinder by two distinct selectible transport paths, only one of which includes the second printing unit's printing cylinder.

    摘要: A plurality of stepper motors, each of which comprises a stator assembly and a rotor, are axially aligned to form with a control system an encoder for use in a printing apparatus. The rotors constitute print wheels which support different print characters. The stator assembly of each motor only extends above a part of the circumference of the associated rotor. This enables the axial extent of the print wheels to be reduced, A sensor arrangement is provided to enable the home position of each wheel to be determined. In operation, the control system receives desired print character information and rotates the associated rotor to the correct position for printing to take place. Once all rotors have been rotated to their desired position for printing, printing can then take place. The arrangement enables the printing process to run faster than previously.

    摘要: Method for marking a large number of credit cards with unique credit card numbers. A lot size of plastic sheets is selected which is related to the numerical base, b, for expressing the sheet numbers. Each sheet is identically marked with position numbers placed in each of a plurality of uniform credit card areas on each sheet with each area having a position number differing from the position numbers of the other areas on the sheet. Each sheet in the lot is marked with an individual sheet number with sheet numbers being marked by separately marking the individual digits making up the sheet number. After marking the sheets with a digit in the sheet number, the sheets are sorted before marking the next digit. The sorting size is dependent upon the numerical base, b, and the order of the digit which has been marked. After sorting, the sheets in each of the sorted groups have the same distribution of sheet numbers. The next digit is then marked on the sheets and the sheets are again sorted, etc., until all the digits of the sheet numbers have been marked. The sheet numbers are marked in each of the uniform credit card areas on each sheet. At the end of the marking procedure, each credit card area, thus, bears a unique credit card number made up of the position number of the credit card area coupled with the sheet number marked on the particular sheet.
