A steering system turns the two wheels of the front portion in a first direction and the two wheels of the rear portion in an opposite direction. The steering system is powered by the hydrostatic pump. A pedal control system has a first pedal controlling driving the vehicle in a forward direction and a second pedal controlling driving the vehicle in a rearward direction.

A method of moving a high mobility wheeled vehicle for transporting long loads, such as trimmed tree trunks or whole trees, over roadless terrain. The vehicle has front and rear quad wheel assemblies pivotally connected to a centrally disposed elongated bed frame so as to permit lateral rotation of these assemblies about a roll axis disposed below and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bed frame.The quad wheel assembly incorporates a unique mounting for each of the wheels of the assembly which provides for individually controlled motors for driving each wheel, individually controlled brakes, and individually controlled, power actuated extensible links for steering each wheel. Sensors are provided on each wheel assembly which generate signals proportional to the rotational velocity and direction of the wheel and proportional to the turning angle of each wheel. A microprocessor receives all such signals and compares same with a desired turning angle and rotational velocity of the wheels in accordance with one of a plurality of modes of operation of the vehicle selected by the operator, and generates appropriate control signals to the individually controlled wheels to adjust the turning motion and the rotational velocity to that required to effect the desired movement of the vehicle. The described vehicle is operated according to any selected one of a plurality of distinct movement patterns.

A robotic vehicle for traversing surfaces is provided. The vehicle is comprised of a chassis supporting a magnetic drive wheel for driving and steering the vehicle and a stabilization mechanism. The magnetic wheel comprises two flux concentrator yokes and an axially magnetized hub extending therebetween. The hub includes a central housing configured to house a sensor probe and enhance the magnetic pull force of the wheel by providing a continuous pathway of high magnetic permeability material for magnetic flux to flow axially through the drive wheel. The stabilization mechanism comprises a front and rear facing support element moveably coupled to the chassis and configured to contact the surface and move symmetrically relative to the chassis thereby maintaining the vehicle and probe normal to the surface and providing stability to the vehicle while traversing surfaces regardless of surface curvature and vehicle orientation.

The haulage vehicle has a frame member with separate front and rear sections that are connected to each other by universal means and are free to articulate in a plurality of planes. The frame rear section has a transversely mounted rear axle adjacent the rear portion on which a pair of propelling wheels are mounted and a transversely mounted intermediate axle adjacent the front portion of the frame rear section on which a pair of intermediate propelling wheels are mounted. The frame front section has a transversely mounted front axle on which a pair of front propelling wheels are mounted. Separate propelling motors are mounted adjacent each of the propelling wheels and are drivingly connected to the adjacent propelling wheel. All of the propelling wheels are steerable and the drive motors are movable therewith. A body member is supported on the frame rear section and a boom member is supported on the frame front section. The boom member is connected to the body member by a plurality of longitudinally extending flexible plates, so that the boom and body members are free to articulate in a plurality of planes. Endless conveying means are positioned in the longitudinal haulage compartment formed by the body and boom members. With this arrangement all of the propelling wheels on the haulage vehicle remain in contact with the ground as the haulage vehicle moves over uneven terrain and the haulage vehicle follows the contour of the uneven terrain.

A vehicular steering arrangement is provided which is substantially unaffected and uncontaminated by a rolling relationship between separate chassis portions of the vehicle. Steering gear on one chassis portion provides accurate mechanical steering on a separate and relatively rotatable chassis portion without passing any portion of the steering connecting apparatus through the roll axis between the two chassis portions. The steering apparatus between the two chassis portions has a compact freely rotatable interconnection effectively concentric with the roll axis. Steering motion is provided by the translation of this rotatable interconnection transverse the roll axis. A continuous passageway is provided therethrough to allow an interchassis drive shaft to pass directly along the inter-chassis roll axis inside the rotatable interconnection.
