A mobile robot generally including a first suction module, a second suction module and a hinge assembly pivotably connecting the suction modules together. Each of the suction modules includes a support frame defining a vacuum chamber and a vacuum unit supported on the support frame and communicating with the vacuum chamber. The vacuum unit includes a rotating impeller and an exhaust cowling surrounding the impeller. The impeller has an axis of rotation and is adapted to draw air from the vacuum chamber into the impeller in a direction generally parallel to the impeller axis of rotation and to discharge the drawn air in a direction substantially perpendicular to the impeller axis of rotation. The exhaust cowling is adapted to redirect the discharged air, whereby a thrusting force is applied to the support frame in a direction opposite of the direction of the drawn air from the vacuum chamber.

A plurality of n flexible airbag tires are in contact with the terrain and are driven by n top drive rollers carried by the chassis of the vehicle which frictionally engage and drive the airbag tires. A novel electromotive drive system is provided which includes a plurality of n electromotive drive motors connected to each of the n top drive rollers. Separate controllers having speed sensors and torque sensors are provided for sensing and controlling the instantaneous rotational speed and torque of each independent electromotive drive motor. A central, cab mounted computer based controller responsive to the independent motor controllers and various other inputs controls the instantaneous speed and torque of each of the individual drive motors. The independent speed and torque control of each drive motor is used to increase traction, assist steering, provide braking and regenerative electrical power.

A vehicle suitable for on-and off-road use has a track drive with auxiliary frames mounted under the vehicle frame between front and rear wheels, the auxiliary frames having continuous tracks on carrier wheels driven by hydraulic motors, each auxiliary frame being independently vertically displaceable relative to the vehicle frame by means of corresponding lifting cylinders between a fully retracted position for travel on wheels only, and a fully extended position for tracks only travel. The lifting cylinders are adjustable for leveling the vehicle to a horizontal position on uneven ground while the vehicle is supported on the tracks. Such an auxiliary track drive can be installed in an existing motor vehicle for improved off road usage and particularly for use in soil sounding applications.

A tractor has a PTO shaft disposed at one side and generally centrally so that it can be connected to an input shaft of an implement extending laterally from the tractor's rear lifting device. The PTO shaft is housed to be movable laterally towards or away from the remainder of the tractor. The tractor's engine is between its front and rear wheels and its drive shaft is transverse to the tractor's longitudinal centerline. The width of the engine is less than the width from outboard side to outboard side of the tractor's front wheels. The fuel tank is offset on one side of the tractor opposite the aforesaid PTO. The front wheels of the tractor are situated within the tracks of the rear wheels so that the front and rear wheel tracks do not overlap and are about equal distances apart. All wheels are driven by individual hydraulic motors. Two further PTO shafts extend to the tractor's three-point lifting device and the other to one side thereof. An alarm alerts the operator if the power required for the tractor's propulsion is a disproportionate share of that available whereby there is insufficient power for the aforesaid or other PTO shafts and any implements connected thereto. The hydraulic fluid which drives the wheels can be delivered to the front or rear wheels either in series to ensure both wheels are powered or in parallel.
