    Abstract: A saddle-type vehicle includes a power unit including a multistage transmission having a plurality of gear positions, a transmission actuating mechanism for changing the gear positions, a shift spindle as an input shaft of the transmission actuating mechanism, a crankcase housing therein the multistage transmission and the transmission actuating mechanism, and a crankcase cover covering a side portion of the crankcase. The shift spindle is disposed in the periphery of the crankcase cover and is coupled to a shift actuator mounted on the crankcase cover by a joint rod. Such saddle-type vehicle having a power unit with a shift spindle movable by a shift actuator, in which the shift spindle and the shift actuator are combined with each other in a small-size layout with a joint rod joining the shift spindle and the shift actuator to each other, allows the joint rod to be installed in position with ease.

    Abstract: A sequential gear shift system for two-way operated speed change gear units of manually propelled vehicles. Mirrored, spaced-apart lever operators, are provided with increasing lever stroke ratio, and actuate sequentially with twin mirrored one-way multi-tooth rack-clutch mechanisms, that rapidly engage with a shift element and convert linear torque to rotate the shift element in diametrically opposite directions. The rack-clutch mechanisms may be disengaged from the shift element when returning to normal. The actuating may occur via independent hydraulic operation of an actuator. The actuator housing and load bearing axle of the speed change gear hub are selectively, releasably, and coaxially interconnected into a rigid gear system load bearing axle, and may be combined at any angle, and a shift direction is selectively reversible.

    Abstract: A sprocket having a gear tooth valley radius which varies around the sprocket perimeter provides additional gear torque multiplication to a rider, which is especially beneficial when climbing hills. In some embodiments, the sprocket is a bicycle chainring with reduced gear tooth valley radius over at least a portion of the chainring. In other embodiments, the sprocket is a bicycle rear wheel cassette cog with increased gear tooth valley radius over at least a portion of the cassette cog. Regions of both reduced and increased gear tooth valley radius may be present on a given sprocket. The sprocket valley floor surface may be rounded or may include N segments adjoined by N vertices. The segments of the valley floor surface may be curved or straight. The vertices of the valley floor surface may be curved or angled. Embodiments for bicycles and motorcycles are presented.

    Abstract: A rack-driven seated handcycle is a semi-recumbent style two, three, or four wheeled human powered cycle that uses a linearly designed toothed rack with teeth located on the topside and bottom side of the rack, and a gear that meshes with the top teeth and a gear that meshes with the bottom teeth, at least one ratchet mechanism, and a chain coupling the upper and lower gears with the drive wheel which may be located in front or back of the rider. The rider pushes and pulls the “handlebars” forward and rearward to pull the rack back and forth in relation to the pinions above and below the toothed rack to drive chain(s) to propel the cycle forward. Each forward and each rearward stroke may constitute a power stroke to propel the cycle. A plurality of gear speeds is able to in select a lever ratio for each of the forward and the rearward strokes.

    Abstract: A bicycle drive unit includes a planetary gear mechanism, a first motor and a second motor. The planetary gear mechanism includes a sun gear, a ring gear, a plurality of planetary gears and a carrier. The ring gear is disposed around the sun gear on the same axis as the sun gear. The planetary gears are disposed between the sun gear and the ring gear. The carrier rotatably holds the planetary gears and receives an input rotation of a crankshaft. The first motor is configured to transmit torque to the carrier. The second motor is configured to transmit torque to the sun gear and control the rotation of the sun gear.
