    摘要: A method and apparatus for operating an airfoil system. A gas may be generated. The gas may be sent into an inflatable airfoil system comprising an inflatable air foil and a section. The inflatable airfoil may have an inner end and an outer end in which the inflatable airfoil may be comprised of a number of materials that substantially pass electromagnetic waves through the inflatable airfoil. The section may have a number of openings in which the inner end of the inflatable airfoil may be associated with the section. The section may be configured to be associated with a fuselage. The number of openings may be configured to provide communications with an interior of the inflatable airfoil. The section with the number of openings may be configured to reduce reflection of the electromagnetic waves encountering the section.

    摘要: A high-altitude unmanned stratosphere aerial vehicle includes a fuselage, wings, control surfaces, and a propulsion system including an engine and a propeller. Each wing has a plurality of hoses and wing spars extending in a direction perpendicularly to the longitudinal fuselage axis and are surrounded by a skin forming a wing covering that determines the cross-sectional contour of the wing, the cross-sectional contour forming a laminar flow airfoil that generates high lift when there is low flow resistance. At the free end facing away from the fuselage, each wing has a winglet extending transversely to the longitudinal wing axis. The winglet has a movable control surface, which allows an aerodynamic side force to be generated so as to bring the aerial vehicle to a banked position.

    摘要: An inflatable structure constructed of flexible material that can occupy a minimal volume when in a deflated and stored condition as compared to its fully inflated and deployed configuration, has sufficient structural rigidity to function as a wing when deployed. The wing includes an array of inflatable chambers with generally circular cross-sections. The chambers are spaced a particular distance between their centers and held in that spacing by an outer wing skin. For equal cross-sectional diameter chambers this distance is less than the diameter. When the chambers are inflated the close spacing causes tension in the opposing surfaces to create a rigid structure.

    摘要: The canopy of the ram air parachute of the present invention has cells which are trapezoidal in shape. The non-loaded ribs of the canopy are shorter in height than the loaded ribs. The different height ribs results in tensioning of the bottom skin and transfer of forces from the loaded rib-bottom skin junction through the bottom skin to the non-loaded rib. The non-loaded rib is then tensioned to not float up as high. Thus, the spanwise distortion of the top skin is reduced and the aerodynamics are improved.

    摘要: The Duffel Bag Airplane is an inflatable flying wing unmanned airborne vehicle (UAV). The fuselage will house everything but the wings. The wing can be rolled up around the fuselage into a small package when deflated for easy transportation, such as by being carried in a duffle bag. Fabric construction, a small internal combustion engine with cooled exhaust, and wing warping controls combine to make the airplane inexpensive and extremely stealthy. All the usual signatures have been suppressed, which allow it to be used to make observations from close range under combat conditions. Control of this airplane is accomplished by warping the wings and is supplemented with stability augmentation.

    摘要: A sandwich skin construction that is comprised of an internal structure comprising a plurality of cones disposed between two outer skins is disclosed. The interior contains a pressurized gas to give the resulting sandwich skin construction added strength over a similarly constructed non-pressurized structure of the same material with an equivalent mass. Various attributes of the cones can be adjusted, for example, size and angle, to optimize the performance of the sandwich skin construction to a variety of external stresses. Moreover, a method is provided for manufacturing the sandwich skin construction. The structure can be placed in a pressurized environment before attaching the outer skins.
