The disclosure provides a method of composting cattle waste comprising the steps of forming a windrow of beef cattle manure, adding moisture to the windrow, monitoring the temperature of the windrow, maintaining the moisture content of the windrow and mixing the windrow after a predetermined temperature drop. The windrow is formed in an outdoor environment, preferably without a carbon amendment. During active composting, the moisture content of the organic portion of the windrow is kept within a range of 40% to 65% by weight. Steps of monitoring the temperature, addition moisture, and mixing are repeated until such steps do not create a predetermined significant temperature increase following the step of mixing. The manure is cured and analyzed as final steps in the process before packaging and shipping.

A method and an apparatus is provided for aeration of organic material, wherein the organic material undergoes an aerobic composting process, such that air is caused to evenly penetrate the organic material. The organic material is first sealed in a vessel. Air is then delivered to the contents of the vessel such that an air pressure of from about 1 to about 1000 kPa above atmospheric pressure is maintained in the vessel. A pressure differential initially forms and is then allowed to equilibrate over a period of time, in which time air flows from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure in the organic material thus ensuring that aeration is evenly distributed throughout the organic material.

The present invention relates to a process for producing compost, characterized in that when the compost is produced by inoculating aerobic composting seed bacteria to an organic waste material, the process comprises: supplying oxygen while the waste material is stirred, and supplying water so that the water content of the waste material is 60±5%, and to a process for producing compost, characterized in that when the compost is produced by inoculating aerobic composting seed bacteria to an organic waste material, the process comprises, after begining of the fermentation, adding sugars to the waste material in a divisional manner before a main fermentation is transferred to the amine/ammonium metabolic system. Further, according to the present invention, an apparatus for producing compost is provided. The apparatus comprises: a fermentation vessel having an oxygen supplying means, a water distributing means, and a stirring means; and a control means for detecting or determining the moisture content of an organic waste material contained in the fermentation vessel to control, on the basis of the detected or determined result, the amount of water to be distributed by the water distributing means. According to the present invention, when organic waste materials disposed from food processing factories and the like is processed to produce compost of high quality, formation of ammonium and amines mainly causing unpleasant odors or generation of lower fatty acid which is a factor for a growth inhibition of plants can be suppressed, and the compost can be produced in stable, and within a short period of time.

The invention includes a method and apparatus for composting source materials such as organic materials, but also including hazardous and toxic material, by maintaining composting conditions within preselected limits. A sealable container includes an insulated chamber having a base with a gravity well; a flat, perforated floor forming a small air and leachate drain space between the floor and base, and air inlet and outlet conduits. Dampers control flow of air or other gases responsive to various conditions or sensors. According to the method, the composition of the organic material is amended and/or inoculated as required to convert the source material to a compostable mixture. Incubating forms a composting mixture from the compostable mixture. The method includes the steps of monitoring and adjusting conditions of the composting mixture to maintain the conditions within preselected limits. The conditions of the composting mixture are adjusted by aerating the composting mixture or re-mixing the composting mixture. The re-mixed composting mixture is incubated to yield composted organic material. Various systems are disclosed which use sealable containers designed to function with existing material handling equipment, including, alternatively, fork trucks, roll-off trucks, and intermodal equipment.

A permeable mass of remediable materials is subjected to biotic or abiotic treatment in a refillable containment in order to change the physical and/or chemical composition of the mass and/or contaminants within it by manipulating the biotic and abiotic in the subsurface environment. It is an adaptation of the SBS Close Lance system for decontamination of polluted soil. Such system when fitted to a refillable containment is used to compost and decontaminate remediable materials by promoting and exploiting biotic and abiotic activity. Ex-situ treatment of remediable materials including soils, refuse, wastes, drilling muds and minerals are possible as is composting of waste prior to alternate use by recycling.

Composting according to the method can occur within a sealable container. Adjusting the composition of the organic material to within preselected limits converts the organic material to a compostable mixture. The composition is adjusted by amending the organic material and by mixing the amended organic material with a bulking agent and an inoculant. Incubating forms a composting mixture from the compostable mixture.
