The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for treating and/or pre-treating liquid manure or biogas plant reject for eliminating harmful substances, particularly nitrogen, phosphorus, and odor molecules. Process tanks (5), which include inlet means (4) for supplying a process tank (5) with a substance to be treated, outlet means for passing a post-treatment matter out of the tank, and air inlet means (2) for supplying the process tank with air required by a biological process, are used for conducting a biological treatment on the matter to be treated. The process tanks (5) are first provided with a microbe population adapted for treating the matter to be treated. The matter to be treated is supplied gradually into the first process tank and then further into a subsequent process tank, such that the microbe population initially provided in the process tanks displaces in a step-by-step manner the original microbe population present in the matter to be treated. The matter, which is substantially free of the original microbes and has been expelled from the final process tank, is returned into the first process tank for diluting the matter to be treated. Downstream of the process tanks is conducted a nitrogen removal treatment by feeding the matter to be treated from the process tank (5) of a stripping tower (22A), in which the pH of a matter to be treated has been raised by means of a biological treatment to a level sufficient from the standpoint of nitrogen removal.

An apparatus for recovering nutrients or water from digestate comprises one or more solid-liquid separation units, an ammonia stripping device, and a gas scrubbing unit. In a process, digestate is separated into a solids portion and a liquid portion. Ammonia is stripped from the liquid portion and converted into an ammonium salt solution which may be sold or used as, or blended with, a fertilizer product. Optionally, at least part of the remaining liquid portion may be concentrated to produce brine. The brine is mixed with the solids portion. The mixture may be dried and used as, or blended with, a fertilizer product. Optionally, a least part of the remaining liquid portion may be re-used as dilution water in a digester. A solids portion of the digestate, and one or both of an ammonium salt solution and a brine, may be used as fertilizer without thermal drying.

A method and system to improve in vitro anaerobic digestion processes are disclosed. Simultaneous digestion of dairy manures with various food wastes improves anaerobic process stability and methane production. Co-digestion with blood meal and sweet clover (“BMSC”) at the proper concentrations improves nutrient balance and digestion, biogas production, gives more predictable ammonia concentrations, enhances nutrient content of soil amendment products, and increases the potential for production of ammonia-based fertilizer synthesis. Balanced introduction of BMSC with dairy manure increases methane production, reduces or eliminates co-digestion process limitations, and simplifies storage and delivery of the co-substrate. Following digestion, downstream or back-end products can be produced, including methane, and ammonium based fertilizers. Embodiments advantageously provide a treatment methodology for increased methane production while minimizing the anaerobic digestion process limitations from the use of raw animal wastes exclusively.
