A method and plant for thermally treating braking elements after a forming step, including a convective heating step at 150-300° C. and a infrared irradiation heating step, immediately in succession one relative to the other. A tunnel convection furnace is crossed by at least a first conveyor belt which translates along a first direction and on an upper face of which the braking elements are placed, is arranged laterally adjacent, with respect to the first direction, to an infrared heating tunnel furnace crossed by a second conveyor belt which translates along a second direction, parallel and opposite to the first one, and on an upper face of which the braking elements are placed. The first conveyor belt is larger than the second conveyor belt, and the braking elements appear in multiple side-by-side rows in a transverse and oblique direction with respect to the first and second directions. Robots placed at the opposite ends of the furnaces transfer the braking elements from the first conveyor belt to the second one or vice versa to a first end of the furnaces and place them on the first conveyor belt or second one to a second end of the furnaces being opposite to the first one, so as to change at will the sequence in which the infrared and convective heating steps are performed.

It is possible to generate the nitride compound layer having a desired phase mode uniformly all over a component to be treated and to manufacture a nitrided steel member high in pitting resistance and bending fatigue strength.

In one aspect, there is provided a method comprising: providing a furnace wherein the metal part is passed therethough on a conveyor belt and comprises a hot zone and a cooling zone wherein the cooling zone has a first temperature; and introducing a cryogenic fluid into the cooling zone where the cryogenic fluid reduces the temperature of the cooling zone to a second temperature, wherein at least a portion of the cryogenic fluid provides a vapor within the cooling zone and cools the metal parts passing therethrough at an accelerated cooling rate.

The invention relates to a roller hearth furnace for the heat treatment of coated metal sheets as well as to a corresponding method. The objective of the invention is to put forward a roller hearth furnace that allows the alternating processing of AlSi-coated metal sheets and metal sheets with zinc alloy coatings for hot-working, whereby considerably less effort is involved for the alternating procedure than is the case in the state of the art. The roller hearth furnace according to the invention for the heat treatment of coated metal parts is characterized in that it has at least a first zone and a second zone, whereby in the first zone, a temperature below the melting temperature of the AlSi deposits or a temperature of more than approximately 900° C. [1652° F.] can be maintained, whereas in the second zone, a temperature of more than approximately 870° C. [1598° F.] can be reached.

An inventive automated heat treatment system has a furnace for heat treating forged engine valves, a carry-in mechanism for transporting the forged valves into the furnace, and a carry-out mechanism for transporting heat treated valves out of the furnace. Each of the carry-in mechanism and the carry-out mechanism has a retention mechanism for retaining valves hung, and a transport mechanism for transporting valves to the furnace as they are hung. The furnace has heating means, groups of paired rails for supporting and moving the valves hung in the furnace, and a stopper for controlling the positions of the valves on the rails. The engine valves are maintained hung with their umbrella-shaped portions supported by the respective mechanisms throughout the automated heat treatment processes. Thus, the heat treatment of engine valves is done in a fewer steps than in a conventional system.
