A stretchable fabric comprising NYCO fabric with about 2 to about 4 wt. % elastic, such as an elastane as LYCRA®, is disclosed. The stretchable fabric of the invention exhibits about 20 to about 50% fabric stretch, and is suitable for application in combat uniforms where mobility and comfort are desirable. The stretchable fabric maintains or exceeds substantially all military uniform standard requirements and exhibits characteristics such as breaking strength, tear resistance, air permeability and abrasion resistance similar to that of NYCO fabric. Also disclosed is a garment manufactured from the stretchable fabric, as well as methods for manufacturing, dying and finishing the stretchable fabric.

The present invention relates to cellulosic substrates with reduced absorbent capacity having the capability to wick liquids, as well as to methods of manufacturing such cellulosic substrates. The cellulosic substrates provided by the present invention comprise an inside and an outside connected to the inside. The inside comprises cellulosic fibers and has a reduced absorbent capacity, and the outside comprises cellulosic fibers. The outside may have a reduced absorbent capacity and may have an absorbent capacity higher than the inside. The cellulosic substrate is capable of wicking liquid contacting the inside of the substrate to the outside of the substrate.

Bi-directional and multi-axial fabrics, fabric composites, ballistically resistant assemblies thereof, and the methods by which they are made. The fabrics are comprised of sets of strong, substantially parallel, unidirectional yarns lying in parallel planes, one above the other, with the direction of the yarns in a given plane rotated at an angle to the direction of the yarns in adjacent planes; and one or more sets of yarns having lower strength and higher elongation interleaved with the strong yarns. The fabrics of the invention provide superior ballistic effectiveness compared to ordinary woven and knitted fabrics but retain the ease of manufacture on conventional looms and knitting machines.

Fabrics having enhanced allergen barrier capabilities are described. The fabrics are woven and calendered, and desirably face finished to provide lightweight, thin fabrics having good aesthetic properties. The fabrics also have good moisture vapor transport characteristics and superior allergen barrier capabilities, and in particular, superior barrier capabilities for cat dander allergen (representing smaller allergen particle size), as well as dust mite allergen. Protective coverings made from the fabrics and methods for their production are also described.

The present invention relates to a process for producing a textile-elastomer composite. The inventive procedure involves (a) producing an elastomer composition of at least three ingredients (an anionically-stabilized waterborne polymer dispersion, an acid-generating chemical, and a cloud-point surfactant); (b) applying the composition onto a porous textile substrate; and (c) heating said coated fabric to cause coagulation of the elastomer composition over the fabric substrate and to dry the resultant composite without destroying the coagulated structure. The resultant composite obtains a suppleness and appearance that is similar to that of leather, while exhibiting improved resistance to ultraviolet radiation and hydrolysis and other types of polymer degradation. The composite may be utilized as upholstery fabric in furniture or in automobiles, in apparel, and the like. The particular composites produced are also contemplated within this invention.

A textile substrate for seat covers, a woven fabric or a knitted fabric, especially Raschel or Malimo, contains at least 40% by weight of wool and at least 15% by weight of ramie, but always more than 85% by weight of both taken together. The substrate can consist exclusively of wool and ramie but can also contain further constituents, preferably of animal or vegetable origin such as cotton, linen, hemp or else natural rubber. To obtain antistatic properties, it can contain incorporated metal threads. Minor proportions of synthetic fibres, for example polyester, are also possible. The substrate can be formed for example as a woven fabric with a blend yarn (1) of 80% by weight of wool and 20% by weight of ramie in the warp and ramie threads (2) in the weft. Textile substrates of the kind described offer on account of their excellent water absorption and transport properties high comfort as seat covers especially even over seats which are frequently used for a long period without interruption such as wheelchairs, seats in cars and buses, in trains and in aircraft and also office chairs. On account of their composition, the fabrics are also disposable in a very environmentally benign manner, since comminuted and kept at sufficiently high moisture and temperature they rot down substantially or--in particular when consisting exclusively of natural fibre--completely and are thus compostable.

A method for making a fabric material includes the steps of weaving a plurality of strands of a warp yarn in a warp direction with a plurality of strands of a first filling yarn impregnated with silver ions in a filling direction and a plurality of strands of a second filling yarn impregnated with copper ions in the filling direction. Each of the plurality of stands of the first filling yarn and each of said plurality of strands of the second filling yarn are alternately woven with the plurality of strands of the warp yarn in the filling direction. The method further includes scouring the fabric material to remove external matter, conditioning the fabric material in order to soften it, drying the fabric material, and calendaring the fabric material to smoothen it.

In various embodiments, small denier natural or synthetic yarns are used in the warp direction to interlace the carbon fiber wefts with minimum deformation. Specific weave designs are used in combination with the small denier yarn to maintain the primary carbon fiber weft and warp un-crimped.

The present invention is based on the realization that improved wicking of liquid from an inner face to an outer face of a fabric can be achieved by a fabric structure where the inner face of the fabric has a substantially uniform hydrophobicity and where the inner face is formed by hydrophobic yarn that is assembled in a manner that allows the liquid to penetrate between hydrophobic yarn and make contact with hydrophilic yarn that forms at least part of the outer face of the fabric. When liquid penetrates the inner face and makes contact with the hydrophilic yarn, liquid is able to be drawn through the inner face to the outer face of the fabric. Although the hydrophobic and hydrophilic yarns and may be made from any one or a blend of man-made or synthetic fibers, and natural fibers, it is preferred that the yarns and the fully formed fabric be made entirely of cotton fibers. The fabric is suitable for use in a wide range of applications including underwear. Another application involves laminating the fabric to a functional film such as a waterproof and/or windproof breathable membrane to produce functional outerwear garments.
