摘要:
An apparatus is disclosed for preparing a quantity of individual treated fibers from one or more fiber mats. The apparatus comprises a fiber treatment zone, and a conveyor for conveying each mat through the fiber treatment zone. In the treatment zone each mat is impregnated by an applicator with a treatment material, such as a crosslinking substance, and conveyed directly to an attrition device. The attrition device fiberizes the mats to form a fiber output having a low nit level, such as no more than about three, and a dryer both dries the fiber output and cures the crosslinking substance. The fiberizer is configured to minimize the accumulation of fiber at locations therein. Fiber is transported from the attrition device to the dryer at a high velocity under reduced pressure to promote drying. A heated retention bin is provided after drying to increase curing time in the system. A thermobonding agent may be added to the dried and cured fibers to enhance the wet strength of webs made from the fiber.

Acetals of glyceraldehyde, when applied to cotton fabric by conventional pad-dry-cure procedures using special combined acid catalysts, were found to crosslink the cellulose hydroxyl groups at a very rapid rate (e.g., 10 seconds at 170.degree. C.), thereby imparting improved wrinkle recovery. In particular, the aldehydes studied were the diethyl and dimethyl acetals of glyceraldehyde. The best results were obtained with glyceraldehyde dimethyl acetal.

Novel polyacetal polymers are presented. The polymers provide outstanding renewable soil release, anti-soil redeposition and anti-static properties when applied to natural and synthetic textile substrates, especially textile substrates containing polyester fibers.

The present invention is a method of modifying cellulosic fibrous materials characterized by impregnating a cellulosic fibrous material with a modifier containing a polyoxymethylene dialkyl diether having at least three oxymethylene groups per molecule and reacting same with the fibrous material in the presence of an acid substance. Also covered are novel modifier compositions containing a polyoxymethylene dialkyl diether of the type described above and an acid catalyst.
