    Abstract: This invention describes a variable valve timing mechanism which may be fitted to an internal combustion engine to provide precise control over timing of the valve opening and closing events of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft. Various methods for its application are described to provide settable valve timing at either predetermined angle selected by the operator, or automatic variable valve timing as governed by parameters of the operating engine. Said mechanism comprised of oppositely located idler rollers, whereas not bound to a single yoke or carrier, are driven by a cam to achieve independent movement of the rollers, which bear against both tension and slack sides of the belt between the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys causing predictable and repeatable variation in valve timing. Thus, this invention, whereby coordinated but non-uniform movements of the idler rollers is achieved by the mechanical appurtenances described herein, including a specially developed cardioid cam to actuate said idler rollers, produces precise changes in camshaft phase angle.

    Abstract: An engine system includes a first camshaft, a second camshaft, a first camshaft phaser, and a second camshaft phaser. The first camshaft phaser has a first camshaft sprocket, and the second camshaft phaser has a second camshaft sprocket. The engine system also includes a crankshaft spaced from the first and second camshafts, and a crankshaft sprocket coupled to the crankshaft. The engine system further includes a timing chain coupled to the first and second camshaft sprockets, and the crankshaft sprocket. The timing chain is configured to transmit torque from the crankshaft sprocket to the first and second camshaft sprockets upon rotation of the crankshaft. The engine system further includes a biasing member extending from a first end portion coupled to the first camshaft phaser to a second end portion coupled to the second camshaft phaser to maintain tension on the timing chain between the first and second camshaft phasers.

    Abstract: A tensioner assembly for an engine timing drive includes a tensioner with a tensioner body having a fastener opening and defining a cavity with a plunger opening. A plunger is disposed in the cavity and a removable pin restrains the plunger in the cavity. The plunger is configured to be biased out of the plunger opening when the pin is removed. A protuberance extends outward from the tensioner body and is adapted to receive an applied torque. The tensioner body is configured to pivot about a center axis of the fastener opening in response to a predetermined torque applied to the protuberance. A method of assembling an engine timing drive includes applying a predetermined torque to a protuberance of a tensioner that is pivotably mounted to a cylinder block to rotate the tensioner toward a rotatable device such that the tensioner applies a predetermined load to the rotatable device.

    Abstract: The valve opening/closing timing control device includes: a driving rotating body; a driven rotating body; a fixed shaft portion; a fluid pressure chamber; a partitioning portion; and a phase control unit for controlling a rotation phase by supplying/discharging pressurized fluid to/from an advancing chamber or a retarding chamber via an inside of the fixed shaft portion. The driven rotating body has: an inner circumferential member with a cylindrical portion, and a coupling plate portion of the camshaft, the cylindrical portion and the coupling plate portion being integrated with each other; and an outer circumferential member provided with the partitioning portion. The outer circumferential member includes the inner circumferential member in a unified manner so as to have the same rotational axis. The inner circumferential member is formed with an iron-based material. The outer circumferential member is formed with a material that is lighter in weight than the iron-based material.

    Abstract: A rotary valve assembly includes a housing for positioning on an engine of the piston and cylinder type. The housing includes an intake passage for conducting a working fluid to the cylinder and an exhaust passage for conducting the working fluid from the cylinder. The housing has an internal cavity which intercepts the intake and exhaust passages, which cavity contains a rotary valve member having a window. The window is so positioned that when the member is rotated, it opens and closes the intake and exhaust passages in a periodic manner. The valve assembly may also include a throttle member mounted in the housing parallel to the rotary valve member. The throttle member has a hole which may be positioned opposite the intake passage. The throttle member is movable relative to the axis of the rotary valve member between a first position which places the hole in the throttle means opposite a first portion of the valve member and a second position which places that hole opposite a second portion of the valve member so that when the valve member is rotated, the open time of the intake passage can be controlled by the position of the throttle member. In some applications, the rotary valve member itself can function as the throttle member. A plurality of similar valve assemblies can be positioned adjacent to one another and concatenated so that they all operate in unison to control the working fluid flow to and from all the cylinders of a multi-cylinder engine. The assembly is particularly suitable for converting an internal combustion engine so that it operates under steam power. Other applications for the assembly are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A variable camshaft timing system for an internal combustion engine varies the relative angular position between the intake camshaft and the exhaust camshaft by controlling the path of the timing belt. First and second idler arms, each having an idler wheel connected thereto, are independently pivoted around a common pivot point by means of a pair of positioning cams operatively connected to an electric stepping motor. The motor is controlled from an electronic control unit which receives signals indicating the engine operating characteristics and through a look-up table steps the positioning cams which in turn pivots the idler arms to rotate the intake camshaft relative to the exhaust camshaft thereby changing the intake valve timing.
