摘要:
An internal combustion engine includes first and second power cylinders and an expander cylinder, and is configured to operate in an expander mode and a bypass mode by selectively fluidly coupling exhaust flow from the first and second power cylinders to the expander cylinder. Operation includes commanding a transition from the bypass mode to the expander mode, including retarding openings of intake valves of the first and second power cylinders to a LIVC position. Exhaust valves of the power cylinders are controlled to effect fluid flow to the expander cylinder, and opening of an outlet valve of the expander cylinder is controlled to a maximum advanced state. The openings of the intake valves of the first and second power cylinders are controlled to desired positions associated with engine operation in the expander mode.

This invention relates to internal combustion engines and more particularly to internal combustion engines and methods of operating the engines with a new fuel saving cycle. Various embodiments use a passage between adjacent cylinders to enable a mode in which fuel combusted in one cylinder supplies pressure to the other that has not been supplied with fuel, thus enabling driving of both cylinders with less fuel.

This invention relates to internal combustion engines and more particularly to internal combustion engines and methods of operating the engines with a new fuel saving cycle. An engine including at least two piston and cylinder assemblies preferably adjacent to one another, that when operating with the new fuel savings cycle, establish at the end of the simultaneous compression strokes a charge of compressed air in one cylinder of one assembly and a charge of compressed air fuel mixture in the other cylinder of the other assembly. When the air fuel mixture is ignited, the high pressure conditions in the other cylinder are immediately communicated through a passage to the one cylinder to accomplish a double expansion during the simultaneous power drive strokes thus using much of the pressure energy before exhaust occurs by the pistons themselves rather than to dump it as is usually done.

A two-stroke internal combustion engine (30) is disclosed. Fuel efficiency is improved and extended over a wide power band by an inlet air valve (108) which controls the air charge and maintains a constant compression ratio. An integrated positive displacement supercharger (50) provides adequate air charge at all power levels and recovers compressor power from unused supercharged air. An integrated post combustion chamber (48) extends the power stroke by mixing combustion gases with ambient air for farther expansion and power production. Exhaust noise is reduced because the combustion gases are vented from the engine at lower pressure, lower velocity and temperature. The opposed cylinder design provides nearly continuous power by combining supercharger power recovery with extended power strokes.

An Internal combustion engine is provided having separately designated combustion and exhaust powered cylinders, for implementing a dual exhaust expansion system which derives additional power from the combustion exhaust gases of each cylinder. The piston in each combustion exhaust cylinder is timed such that one leads the other by approximately 0-180 degrees crankshaft angle. Ignition of a first combustible air/fuel mixture produces combustion gases. Expansion of the combustion gases drives the first combustion piston during a first power stroke. Combustion gases are expelled from the cylinder to a second cylinder via fluidic passage to produce a second power stroke in the second cylinder, from there the combustion gasses are exhausted to atmosphere. Ignition of a second combustible air/fuel mixture produces combustion gases. Expansion of the combustion gases drives the second combustion piston during a third power stroke. Combustion gases are expelled from the second cylinder to the first cylinder via fluidic passage to produce a fourth power stroke in the first cylinder from there the combustion gases are exhausted to atmosphere in a predetermined cycle.
