    摘要: Presented is an internal combustion engine that utilizes horizontally opposed pistons operating in direct opposition to one another in axially aligned open ended cylinders suspended below a base plate and arranged generally symmetrically on opposite sides of a vertical plane coincident with the rotational axis of a longitudinally extending main power crankshaft also suspended for rotation below the base plate. A pair of auxiliary crankshafts are provided spaced on opposite sides of the vertical plane and having rotational axes that lie in a common plane below and parallel with the plane of the base plate and coincident with the longitudinal axis of the cylinders. A cam shaft is provided to be driven by at least one of the auxiliary crankshafts in timed sequence with linear displacement of the pistons and operation of poppet-type intake and exhaust valves actuated by the cam shaft to admit a fuel mixture into the combustion chamber defined by the juxtaposed heads of the pistons. Sparkplugs are provided for igniting the compressed fuel mixture in each of the cylinders in appropriately timed intervals to effect displacement of the pistons in a power stroke. Connecting rods pivotally connect each of the pistons with an associated auxiliary crankshaft, and power connecting rods connect each of the auxiliary crankshafts with the main power crankshaft whereby rotation of the auxiliary crankshafts by linear displacement of the pistons effects complementary rotation of the main power crankshaft.

    摘要: In an internal combustion engine, two opposed pistons of equal radius are slidably mounted in a cylinder and respectively connected to cranks of unequal throws mounted for rotation at oppositely disposed cylinder ends in a common crankcase. The pistons are adjustable in opposing linear travel to define a flexible cylinder-head, the relative piston positions of piston proximity establishing a range of compressions therebetween correspondable to the respective compression-ignitions of a plurality of available fluid fuels. The cranks are gear connected and similarly offset from the cylinder's longitudinal centerline to eliminate dead centers, produce higher combustion pressures at more effective crank angles, and coordinate the pistons' relative linear speeds in exhaust, air intake, fuel injection, compression and power production in two cycle operation of the engine. A preferred embodiment of the invention connects two opposed cylinders offset oppositely from a common cranks' centerline, and with respective cylinders firing alternately.

    摘要: This disclosure pertains to a novel mechanical means adapted for use with mechanical devices having more than one controlled position of operation, including a neutral position. A plurality of linear actuators are mounted in an assembly frame whereby their actuating forces are transmitted through torque arms to an actuator shaft, thus causing an actuator arm to assume responsive positions in a position arc. The actuator shaft torque created by a positioning linear actuator is opposed by a lesser torque created by a neutralizing linear actuator, leaving a torque differential sufficient to operate the mechanical device ultimately actuated. Where the neutral position is at either end of the position arc, one neutralizing linear actuator is required to hold the actuator arm against a stop in the position arc. Where the neutral position is required at some location inside the position arc, two neutralizing linear actuators are required. Each position other than neutral requires a positioning linear actuator. It is obvious from the foregoing description that many combinations of number and location of actuated positions are possible. The preferred embodiment of the invention disclosed herein illustrates one such combination having a central neutral and three controlled positions in each direction along the position arc.

    摘要: A reciprocating motor having a piston rod upon which a group of piston sleeves varying in length is hydraulically actuable against a shoulder of the rod to drive the rod in one direction. Arresting structure is provided to cause the sleeves to become successively arrested in their driving movement so that an initial large area of the combined sleeves which is subjected to the driving fluid is progressively decreased during the stroke. A second similar group of sleeves is similarly operable to return the piston. A separate re-setting element is arranged to automatically reset each group of sleeves to a driving condition preparatory to effecting the next driving stroke of the rod, and to also cushion overtravel of the rod. The rod is cooperably during its stroke with valve elements to cause automatic hydraulic feed alternately to each group of sleeves.
