An internal combustion engine comprises a fuel injector 31, a spark plug 16, a piston 14 having a cavity 91, a swirl control device 95, and a control system 70. The cavity is formed so as to change in distance from the fuel injector to a side wall surface of the cavity, in the circumferential direction. The system performs ignition assist control for successively performing injections of main fuel and ignition assist fuel, makes an air-fuel mixture formed by the ignition assist fuel burn by flame propagation by the spark plug, and makes the remaining fuel burn by pre-mix compression self-ignition. The system controls the swirl control device during the ignition assist control so that when the engine load is high, the fuel sprayed heads toward parts of the side wall surface which are short in distances from the fuel injector.

A fuel injector employs at least one sensing device for sensing material deformations occurring in the injector components during usage to thereby monitor injector performance. The sensing device is preferably at least one of the many piezoelectric sensors available and is advantageously affixed within a cylinder of an injector to detect deformations of the injector cylinder within the needle valve/power piston column of an injector to detect deformations of the column which occurs when the high-pressure fuel in the control chamber is suddenly converted pressure and vice versa. Whereas the sensing devices of the invention can be placed at a variety of locations, they are advantageously arranged to detect material deformations within the injector cylinder or valve/piston column where such deformations are appreciably large during injector usage. Preferably, injectors of the invention are compatible with microprocessor-based fuel injection control systems of the type described above to maintain near-ideal control over the injector.

The present invention has an object to make abnormal combustion of an internal combustion engine detectable by simple means at low cost. For this purpose, an abnormal combustion detecting device provided by the present invention uses a direct injection injector as means for detecting abnormal combustion. In the direct injection injector relating to the abnormal combustion detecting device, a sack chamber is provided at a tip end of a nozzle body, and a nozzle hole is formed to cause the sack chamber and a combustion chamber to communicate with each other. A needle is housed inside the nozzle body, and the sack chamber is opened and closed by the needle, whereby a fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber. The abnormal combustion detecting device detects lift of the needle from a closing position by, for example, a sensor, and determines that abnormal combustion occurs in the combustion chamber by the fact that lift of the needle is detected at a non-operational time of the direct injection injector.
