Abstract:
A solid fuel burner may include a system for electrodynamic homogenization. One or more electrodes may apply an electric field to burning solid fuel or a region proximate the burning solid fuel. The electric field causes mixing and homogenization of volatilized fractions of the solid fuel, combustion gases, and air. The improved mixing and homogenization may reduce emission of carbon monoxide (CO), reduce emission of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), reduce oxygen in flue gas, increase temperature of flue gas, and/or allow for a larger grate surface.
Abstract:
The invention provides a furnace for the controllable combustion of thermite. In an exemplary embodiment, the invention comprises a furnace housing having a combustion chamber into which thermite, in the form of rods, wires, or ribbons of encapsulated pellets, may be fed by an automatic feeder. An electric arc within the housing ignites the thermite. Coils embedded in the furnace housing circulate fluids for drawing off the energy product of thermite combustion beyond the furnace housing for utilization. The rate of combustion may be controlled by use of a vented flue, an adjustable feeder, and by cutter edges which snip the thermite to prevent further burning. The furnace housing contains insulation for retaining combustion heat product so that heat retained by the housing may continue to be drawn off by the coils. The invention provides a compact and thermally efficient furnace for diverse energy purposes, such as home heating or producing steam for driving turbine generators.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for infrasonically intensifying a glow bed (13), supported by a grate (12). In order to improve the beneficial effect of sound on combustion the bed of fuel, located on the grate, is exposed to a high particle velocity of a sound positively produced by an external low frequency sound generator (11) the frequency of which is determined by the sound generator, to provide a reciprocating movement of combustion air and combustion gas through the glow bed. The dimensions of the grate in a plane transverse to the reciprocating movement of combustion air and combustion gas are less than a quarter of the wave-length of the sound generated by the sound generator.
Abstract:
A fuel efficient combination of pressurized combustion and compressed air energy storage in which combustion air compressors have excess capacity which is utilized, during off-peak periods, to charge an underground storage cavern. Air withdrawn from the cavern during peak periods is utilized as combustion air, freeing the turbines which drove the air compressors during the off-peak period to power generators producing peak load electricity.
Abstract:
In the combustion of high sulfur coal, SO.sub.x emission is reduced by pyrolizing the coal in a reducing atmosphere to form char and convert the sulfur compounds to combustible gases including H.sub.2 S. The H.sub.2 S is reacted with the coal and the char to produce ash containing sulfur which is easily removed from the combustion process. A three zone furnace includes a zone in which the coal is pyrolized in a reducing atmosphere to convert the sulfur compounds to combustible gas which reacts with the coal and char.

Abstract:
A method for generating heat from retorted oil shale particles which are carrying a deposit of carbon wherein the particles are lifted upwardly in a heating chamber using a carrier gas and the carrier gas is controlled in relation to the particles so that at any given time during the lifting step a substantial amount of the particles fall downwardly for a finite distance thereby causing internal backmixing of the heated falling particles with relatively cooler rising particles.
Abstract:
An incendiary torch having a cylindrical housing with a nozzle positioned at one end thereof. The nozzle is held in place by a retainer cap threadedly attached to the housing which includes a diaphragm overlying the aperture in the nozzle thereby preventing the ambient environment from entering the torch chamber. The end of the torch housing may be connected to a work holding device.
