    摘要: A radiation collector includes a flexible inflatable unit having a portion constructed to concentrate radiation at generally a predetermined location when the unit is inflated, and including a structure positioned to absorb or receive the concentrated radiation. The inflatable unit is preferably a bag of circular cross-section having a front wall transparent to the radiation and a rear concave reflective wall acting to reflect the radiation to the absorbing or receiving structure at the center of the bag. The entire collector may be actuated to follow the sun for reception of solar energy therefrom, and may have photosensing means desirably mounted to the central light-collecting structure for responding to incoming radiation in a manner maintaining the overall assembly in alignment with the sun.

    摘要: A combination comprises a device for receiving and for directing incoming light in a three dimensional manner to at least one predetermined location together with a solar cell. The device has two light reflecting surfaces and a total internal reflection surface. In operation, the total internal reflection surface transmits the incoming light into the device and totally internally reflects the light reflected from the surface which is incident at its surface at an angle within the range for total internal reflection. The reflection surfaces are operatively disposed with respect to one another so as to perform the function of a receiver/director by directing incoming light in a three dimensional manner to the rear surface of the solar cell.

    摘要: A thin, flexible film made of a transparent polymeric material including a structured surface and an opposite smooth surface, wherein light striking either surface, within certain angular ranges, is totally internally reflected. The structured surface includes a linear array of miniature substantially right angled isosceles prisms arranged side-by-side to form a plurality of peaks and grooves. In addition, the perpendicular sides of the prims make an angle of approximately 45.degree. with the smooth surface, and when the film is curled the smooth surface lies in a smooth continuous arcuate curve without materially affecting the performance of the film. Because of the film's flexibility and its ability to totally internally reflect light, it may be utilized in a variety of ways, for example, as a collector of solar energy or as a light conduit. The performance of the film may be manipulated to permit controlled light leakage.

    摘要: Advanced reflector elements are provided to greatly improve the focusing capabilities of multisurface, light concentrating mirrors. The reflector elements utilize a subconcentrator feature to focus light which is then transmitted, or bypassed, through an adjacent element's lens feature, greatly shortening the distance that light rays must travel to a receiver. The result is a more uniform density of concentrated power at the receiver, generated by a module of much shorter focal length. The bypass elements of this invention permit new extreme module geometries, such as: (1) ninety degree rim angle hyperbolic dishes and troughs where f/D=0.125, (2) very shallow conical reflectors, (3) flat concentrator mirrors that can be pointed directly at the light source with little loss of light, and (4) positive focal length convex reflectors.

    摘要: A solar powered kiln is provided, that is of relatively simple design and which efficiently uses solar energy. The kiln or solids reactor includes a stationary chamber with a rearward end which receives solid material to be reacted and a forward end through which reacted material is disposed of, and a screw conveyor extending along the bottom of the chamber for slowly advancing the material between the chamber ends. Concentrated solar energy is directed to an aperture at the forward end of the chamber to heat the solid material moving along the bottom of the chamber. The solar energy can be reflected from a mirror facing at an upward incline, through the aperture and against a heat-absorbing material near the top of the chamber, which moves towards the rear of the chamber to distribute heat throughout the chamber. Pumps at the forward and rearward ends of the chamber pump heated sweep gas through the length of the chamber, while minimizing the flow of gas through an open aperture through which concentrated sunlight is received.
