Abstract: The instant invention relates to the use of hollow silicon carbide beams as refractory in substantially closed open-arc furnaces used for the carbothermic reduction of metal oxides. The silicon carbide beams are used in areas of the furnace which are exposed to temperatures higher than those tolerated by standard refractories, said areas requiring, in addition, stability to oxidation and reduction type chemical reactions and sufficient electrical resistance to minimize arcing from the exposed electrode. In addition, the invention relates to the use of silicon carbide beams in a two-stage, open-arc furnace for the carbothermic reduction of silicon dioxide to silicon metal.

Abstract: The hopper comprises a cylindrical side wall supported by an annular rolling ring so as to be rotatable about its vertical axis, and a funnel shaped bottom with a central outflow orifice controlled by a valve. To allow rapid removal of the rolling ring, the bottom is separated from the side wall and rests freely on an inner edge of the latter. An apparatus is provided for raising the bottom within the wall and for lifting the side wall slightly from the rolling ring.

Abstract: A side for a furnace used in the manufacture of silicon carbide from silicon dioxide and carbon comprises a plurality of gates which are removably affixed to the furnace or plant floor. Each gate has a base portion intended to be supported by a plant floor and a plurality of upstanding supports. Affixed to each of the upstanding supports are a series of vanes which vanes are sloped downwardly and inwardly toward the center line of the furnace. The width, configuration and vertical spacing between vertically adjacent vanes are all chosen such that the silica sand and carbon mixture cannot flow outwardly through the side of the furnace under the effects of gravity while at the same time gases produced during the reaction may flow readily outwardly through the furnace sides.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a reduction furnace with a split furnace body, particularly suited for production of ferro alloys, pig iron or calcium carbide. Furnaces of such types are provided with a furnace pot equipped with an internal refractory lining anchored to the furnace wall by means of anchoring elements. According to the present invention the refractory lining of at least the upper section of the split furnace body comprises a plurality of individual, pre-fabricated elements which are removably arranged at least on the upper section. Each unit comprises preferably a rear plate of steel, pig iron or similar material and one or more anchoring ribs or bolts extending horizontally out from and rigidly secured to the rear plate. The anchoring ribs provide a hold for the refractory lining on the rear plate. The separate units are suspended at least from the upper segment by means of simple support means.
