An a.c. sine wave voltage is applied across a conductivity cell immersed in the liquid and an admittance signal proportional to the current flowing through the cell is resolved into a signal proportional to the conductance of the liquid, and a signal proportional to the capacitance of the liquid, within the cell. A thermocouple at the conductivity cell produces a signal proportional to the liquid temperature, which is compared with a selected reference temperature signal, and the signal proportional to the difference between the temperature signal and the reference signal is applied to temperature compensation circuits to produce respective signals proportional to the conductance and capacitance of the liquid at the selected reference temperature.

A system for determining the resistance of an electrolyte into which a conductivity probe is immersed, the system including a thermistor network, a probe or conductivity cell, and amplifiers all of which are so combined that the changes in electrolyte concentrations causing variations in resistance are measured with corrections being made for electrolyte temperature variation. The probe and thermistor networks control the feedback of the amplifier, and the probe and thermistor networks being arranged to adjust the output whereby the signal is in true proportion to conductivity.

Apparatus for measuring the electrical impedance of a variety of materials including an electrode arrangement providing sample data to an impedance bridge, a frequency generator providing a test signal to the impedance bridge, the impedance bridge including a transformer having three separate windings, two of which are highly symmetrical to each other and all three of which have an impedance below 10,000 ohms, and four resistors having resistance values differing from the impedance of the transformer windings but comparable to the unknown impedance, two of the four resistors connected to each of the two symmetrical windings of the transformer. Output devices for displaying the electrical impedance are also disclosed. In one embodiment, a sample box useful in the measurement of the electrical impedance of bulk materials including novel means for mounting an electrode therein is disclosed. Also disclosed in another embodiment is apparatus useful for measuring the electrical impedance of thin sheet material including novel mechanical thermal compensation means.

A temperature detector for a conductivity-measuring cell having a heat-sensitive element which has electrical properties that very in accordance with temperature. The heat-sensitive element is inserted in a bore of an electrode of the conductivitymeasuring cell and is not in direct contact with the sample liquid. A metal beaker is first inserted in the electrode, preferably made of graphite, and a small diameter metal tube with a cap is located above the metal beaker. A high thermal conductivity paste is inserted in the space between the bore of the electrode and the metal beaker. The heat-sensitive element can be in the form of a removable cartridge and can consist, for example, of a semiconductor or a platinum resistance thermometer.
