摘要: Embodiments of the invention include an optical fiber device such as a tunable birefringent optical fiber having a core region, a cladding layer therearound, and a controllable active material disposed in, e.g., selective capillaries or pockets formed in the cladding layer. The active materials include, e.g., electro-optic material, magneto-optic material, photorefractive material, thermo-optic material and/or materials such as laser dyes that provide tunable gain or loss. The application of, e.g., temperature, light or an electric or magnetic field varies optical properties of the active material, which, in turn, varies or affects the propagation properties of optical signals in the device. The optical device can include a tapered region or long period grating that causes the core mode to spread or couple into the cladding region and, simultaneously, allows the active material to be relatively close to the propagated modes, thus allowing interaction between the active material and the propagating modes.

摘要: Energy propagating in a dielectric optical waveguide may be transferred from one mode of propagation to another by inducing a spatially undulatory variation in refractive index in the core of the dielectric optical waveguide. Such a variation may be induced by an electro-static field. The electro-static field may be directed either longitudinally of, or transversely of the dielectric optical waveguide. A suitably periodic electro-static field may be generated by positioning a suitable electrode structure about the dielectric optical waveguide. For certain applications it may be desirable to arrange for the spatial period of the electro-static field to vary in a random manner. By arranging for propagating modes to couple to non-propagating modes an optical modulator may be produced.

摘要: The invention disclosed herein is a fiber optic switch which utilizes Kerrells to change the polarization of light passing through a pair of polarizers when an electric field is applied to the Kerr cell. The fiber optic switch is comprised of a pair of transparent polarized panels which have the same index of refraction, a pair of transparent electrodes which are electrically connected to a power source and an electric switch and which are sandwiched between the transparent polarized panels, and a layer of anisotropic material which fills the space between the electrodes.

摘要: Specified herein is a device which includes the use of a rod, or a filament, of light conducting material clad in a second light conducting material presenting a lower index of refraction than the core material but which is electrically controllable. The rod and cladding are supported in an electrode assembly by means of which the light conducting characteristics of the cladding is changed as a function of an electric field established by the electrode assembly so as to permit or prevent the passage of light through the rod. An information display panel embodiment of the invention is also disclosed utilizing a array of such devices.
