Receiving a voltage reference and an input waveform signal; using a second resistor network to apply to the input waveform signal to a comparator when the bias of the second control input is in a first digital state and, to apply a biased and attenuated input waveform signal to the comparator when the bias of the second control input is in a second digital state. Comparing the biased sensor input signal to the waveform applied by the second resistor network to determine an input-cell output, so that the input-cell can convert the sensor input signal to a time-based parameter.

The output control signal produced by the parallel arrangement is a high current, low voltage output signal as compared to the output control signal produced by the series arrangement. According to another aspect, an integrated circuit fabricated on a single semiconductor chip comprises an I/O interface, a control/logic circuit, and a communication interface. The integrated circuit may be advantageously used to provide a highly distributed industrial control system in which control is distributed all the way to the device level.

The method includes provisions for new wiring changes or harnesses as well as preset adapters, converting prior device configuration settings from an I/O module, pack, and/or terminal board to new configuration settings for a programmable I/O device, generating a wiring chart for any wiring changes based on the settings, and displaying the information for the installer and/or programmer's use. This allows a universal I/O device capable of each channel having different operating modes to replace one or more of a mixture of several types of dedicated I/O modules. The installation documentation and configurations are automatically generated, reducing the chance of errors due to misinterpretation of multiple product documents while allowing the automatic transfer of product settings.
