The present invention relates to a programmable control module that may be connected to existing instrumentation in order to automate manual operations and/or perform new sequences of functions. As one specific example, the present invention provides for a programmable control module that may be connected to a commercial cell washing machine, and which directs the automatic performance of steps required to enzymatically deantigenize erythrocytes. There are a number of advantages associated with the present invention. Valuable non-automated or semi-automated instruments may be rendered programmable by an add-on control module, thereby increasing the reproduciblity of function while reducing manpower requirements and avoiding the consequences of human error. Furthermore, the control module may be additionally connected to auxiliary devices which improve the function of the host instrument, including, for example, pumps, valves, or sensors (including safety monitoring devices).

Described are systems, methods and computer-program product for replacing a prior input/output (I/O) module and terminal board with a universal I/O device by providing software based instructions and configuration settings for the installer. The method includes provisions for new wiring changes or harnesses as well as preset adapters, converting prior device configuration settings from an I/O module, pack, and/or terminal board to new configuration settings for a programmable I/O device, generating a wiring chart for any wiring changes based on the settings, and displaying the information for the installer and/or programmer's use. This allows a universal I/O device capable of each channel having different operating modes to replace one or more of a mixture of several types of dedicated I/O modules. The installation documentation and configurations are automatically generated, reducing the chance of errors due to misinterpretation of multiple product documents while allowing the automatic transfer of product settings.

An apparatus receives real time input of sensor information from a plurality of different sources with different interfaces, converts the format of the sensor information into a format compatible with a computer, and transmits the converted sensor information to the computer. The apparatus comprises a plurality of collectors respectively coupled to the sensors for receiving the sensor information. A scan generator is coupled to the collectors and selects each of the collectors for input of the respective sensor information en route to the computer. The scan generator provides timing signals to control the input of the sensor information from each of the collectors. A converter receives the sensor information from the collectors and convert the formats of the sensor information to a format compatible with the computer. Each of the collectors transmits the respective sensor information to the converter based on timing signals provided by the scan generator but receives the sensor information from the respective sensors independent of the scan generator timing signals. Thus, the sensor input is not limited in either format or timing. After the converted sensor information is input to the computer, a server program which is executing within the computer and has knowledge of the original format of the sensor information from each source and the nature of the conversion, converts the converted sensor information back into the original format. Then, a user application program which is also executing within the computer receives the sensor information in its original format which is the expected format.
