Each module controls a step in the overall control process, with a part A which makes a decision for a respective step based on a condition signal CO, and a part D for accordingly controlling as associated action AS. The function provided by the assembled modular control can be represented on a surface as defined by the collection of the front panels of all the modules. This approach to providing control means is particularly useful for a broad range of control technology between hardware logic of elementary logic cells and sophisticated and expensive programmable automatic devices.

Each flipflop module has a trigger inlet for receiving a fluid triggering signal upon completion of the respective preceding programmed operation, a command outlet for furnishing a fluid command signal to initiate a respective programmed operation upon receipt by said inlet of the triggering signal, and a triggering outlet for furnishing a fluid triggering signal upon completion of the respective programmed operation. The trigger inlet and trigger outlet of each module are so arranged and configurated that the flip-flop modules can be placed side-by-side to form a binary chain with the triggering outlet of each module being operatively connected with the trigger inlet of the next module in the chain.

A mechanism to be sequentially controlled is divided into a plurality of functional blocks. Each functional block is assigned to a control block for sequentially controlling the functional block. The mechanism is sequentially and dispersedly controlled by a plurality of control blocks. Synchronization between control blocks is realized by referring to an input/output signal or an internal signal belonging to each control block. Each control block is set with an activation condition for turning on or off its own function so that the whole mechanism can be integrally controlled with an arbitrary condition. The sequence program for each control block is made by using an optimum one from among a conditional type definition, a sequential type definition and a combination of both definitions, in accordance with the control type of the program.

A time-slot addressed, system keyed multiplex device is taught. Briefly stated, a ribbon cable provides a power and ground lead and a clock and data signal lead. A microcomputer or master controller then communicates over the ribbon cable with a plurality of intelligent connectors. Each connector is provided with a unique address such that by counting the number of clock pulses provided by the master controller the logic packages in the intelligent connector recognizes the appropriate time-slot for a response or command signal. A single one-pulse command is then presented by the master controller on the data bus which is then received by the logic circuitry followed by a time period on the data bus when the logic package may send to the master controller a single bit of data. In this manner of command and response, various devices such as relays may be turned on or off with their conditions presented to the master controller.

A control means for hydraulic self-advancing support units for underground working, comprising at least one electrohydraulic control device comprising an electric circuit for energizing electromagnets which actuate hydraulic valves, a command keyboard connected to the energizing circuit, a display connected to the energizing circuit and two multipole connectors for connecting the control device to respective adjacent devices, the multipole connectors being connected to one another and to the energizing circuit by electric lines inside the control device, characterized in that the energizing circuit is substantially made up of a CPU control sub-assembly, a keyboard and display sub-assembly, and a magnet control sub-assembly, these sub-assemblies being interconnected by a common bus line, the line connection between the plug-in connectors comprises at least one flexible printed circuit board connected by at least one ribbon cross-connection to one of the three sub-assemblies, and the magnet control sub-assembly is connected by electric lines to the electromagnets, which are disposed outside the control device and are incorporated in the hydraulic valves.
