Abstract: A lead-acid battery is disclosed. The lead-acid storage battery has a container with a cover, the container including one or more compartments. One or more cell elements are provided in the one or more compartments. The one or more cell elements include a positive plate, the positive plate having a positive grid and a positive electrochemically active material on the positive grid; a negative plate, the negative plate having a negative grid and a negative electrochemically active material on the negative grid, wherein the negative electrochemically active material comprises barium sulfate and an organic expander; and a separator between the positive plate and the negative plate. Electrolyte is provided within the container. One or more terminal posts extend, from the cover and are electrically coupled to the one or more cell elements.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are electrode compositions comprising a homogeneous mixture comprising: a lead-containing material and a carbon additive comprising carbon black and activated carbon. A total amount of the carbon additive ranges from 0.1% to 2% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition. The composition can have a ratio of carbon black to activated carbon ranging from 0.1:0.9 to 0.5:0.5. The activated carbon can have a d50 particle size distribution ranging from 4 μm to 100 μm, and a pore volume of at least 0.7 cm3/g. Also disclosed are electrodes formed from the electrode composition, cells (e.g., lead-acid battery) comprising the electrodes/electrode compositions, and methods of making thereof.

Abstract: A flooded lead-acid battery includes a negative active material, a positive active material having lead dioxide as a main component, and an electrolyte solution that contains sulfuric acid and is flowable. The negative active material of the flooded lead-acid battery contains carbon, a water-soluble polymer formed of a bisphenol condensation product having a sulfonic acid group, and a cellulose ether. The flooded lead-acid battery has low turbidity of the electrolyte solution and is excellent in high rate discharge performance at low temperature, regenerative charge accepting performance, and endurance performance in a partially charged state.
