A system for playing a selected one of multiple audio tracks recorded in synchronized fashion with a motion picture on an optical disk. The optical disk has encoded on it a mixing master music and effects (nullM&Enull) track, or a switching master M&E track. Individual audio tracks are provided for language-specific versions of the same motion picture, but these tracks have data recorded in them only where there is dialog. In this way, for many a motion picture, all tracks but masters will have data recorded for well less than half of the running time of the motion picture. When a mixing master is used, it is mixed with a language-specific track when the latter has dialog; the mixing master contains no dialog. If a switching master is used, it may contain dialog recorded with the M&E; when a language-specific track has dialog recorded in it, it also contains M&E and the track is played to the exclusion of the switching master.

An information signal recording system separates a color video signal into a luminance signal and a carrier chrominance signal. The frequency of the separated carrier chrominance signal is converted to a lower frequency band. A carrier is frequency modulated with at least one audio signal which is mixed with the separated luminance signal and the frequency converted carrier chrominance signal. A carrier is frequency modulated with the mixed signals, and recorded as a main information signal on a main information signal track of a recording medium. A system for reproducing the recording medium reproduces the recorded main information signal from the recording medium. The reproduced main information signal is frequency demodulated, and the resulting output signal is separated into the luminance signal and the frequency converted carrier chrominance signal. The converted carrier chrominance signal is returned to the original frequency and mixed with the separated luminance signal to produce a reproduced color video signal. The frequency modulated audio signal is separated from the frequency demodulated main information signal. The separated frequency modulated audio signal is then demodulated.

The system is arranged to record information indicative of the values of M and N which satisfy fso/M=fr/N (M and N: integers) on the recording medium together with a sampling image signal generated by sampling at a sampling frequency fso and a pilot signal having a frequency fr. Accordingly, it is possible to record and reproduce an image signal on and from the recording medium with the compatibility of the image signal retained irrespective of a sampling frequency.

Demodulation is similarly performed by an exclusive-OR operation applied to the carrier signal and signal indicative of read data.
