A method for adjusting piezoelectric valve components to create a precise interface between a piezoelectric actuator and a movable valve plunger is provided which includes the steps of conducting a coarse adjustment prior to assembly followed by a fine adjustment after assembly. The method includes measuring a first difference between a valve body and a valve plunger, and compensating for this first measured difference such that surfaces of the valve body and the valve plunger are in a common plane. A second common plane is established between an end surface of an actuator housing and an end of an actuator rod. The step of compensating for the first measured difference can comprise machining the surfaces in the first common plane or using a shim. A second adjustment is conducted by rotating a nut disposed axially with the actuator rod to adjust the axial position of the valve plunger.

An air gap pipe and a method for forming the same are provided. The air gap pipe includes a non-linear outer pipe and an inner pipe of identical configuration disposed concentrically within the outer pipe. The inner pipe is supported by resilient dimples in the outer pipe. The outer pipe is placed in a condition for receiving the inner pipe by longitudinally cutting the outer pipe in half with a pre-programmed plasma arc or laser cutting apparatus. The two halves of the outer pipe are secured together to provide vents, if necessary, for selective dissipation of heat.

A packing received around the valve member has at least first and second openings in a sidewall thereof and a third opening that has an original unstretched opening dimension smaller than a cross-sectional dimension of the valve member forcibly inserted through the third opening and thereby enlarges the third opening to a stretched opening dimension. A packing gland engages the packing, and at least one of the packing gland and packing has a non-planar surface that urges the stretched opening dimension of the third opening of the packing toward the original unstretched dimension after the valve member is assembled in the packing.
