An ultrasonic apparatus and method for cutting a non-planar workpiece. The apparatus includes an anvil having a non-planar surface for closely engaging an underside of the workpiece. An ultrasonic horn has a non-planar cutting surface closely receiving a topside of the workpiece, wherein the cutting surface and the support surface have complementary non-planar shapes. The ultrasonic horn resonates at a predetermined frequency effect cutting of the workpiece. If the workpiece has a heat fusible component, the workpiece can also be seamed.

A piece of carpet is placed in a press equipped with a cutting tool and with a plate through which pattern on the carpet can be viewed when the plate overlies the carpet. The position of the plate relative to the cutting tool is accurately controlled and the plate can be moved away from the piece of carpet prior to cutting of the latter. The plate has indicating means which can be aligned visually with selected elements of the pattern of the carpet by manual adjustment of the latter to enable the carpet to be cut at predetermined positions with respect to the pattern.

The apparatus for punching holes in a work member includes a weight-balanced frame member having supported thereon opposed punching die and a matrix. The frame is initially moved vertically to properly position the matrix and die relative to the member to be punched. Located adjacent the matrix are sensing elements that are positioned to be contacted by the member to be punched, which sensing elements, when contacted stop the vertical movement of the frame. This arrangement substantially reduces the pivotal movement of the frame member which occurs during the punching operation and thus greatly minimizes the movement of the balancing weight that is mounted on a lever to maintain the frame in the balanced position free of contact with the member to be punched and thus avoids any substantial acceleration of the weight member which could adversely affect the punching operation.
