摘要: The present invention provides a bidirectional energy-transfer system comprising: a thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete, disposed in a structural object; a location of energy supply or demand that is physically isolated from, but in thermodynamic and/or electromagnetic communication with, the thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete; and a means of transferring energy between the structural object and the location of energy supply or demand. The system can be a single node in a neural network. The thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete includes a conductive, shock-absorbing material, such as graphite. Preferred compositions are disclosed for the thermally and/or electrically conductive concrete. The bidirectional energy-transfer system may be present in a solar-energy collection system, a grade beam, an indoor radiant flooring system, a structural wall or ceiling, a bridge, a roadway, a driveway, a parking lot, a commercial aviation runway, a military runway, a grain silo, or pavers, for example.

摘要: An item such as a fabric-based item or other item may have one or more actuators. An actuator may have a conductive strand of material. A control circuit may supply a current to the conductive strand that induces a length change in the conductive strand due to ohmic heating and associated thermal expansion effects. The control circuit may be used to activate the actuator in response to user input that is supplied to an associated input device such as a switch, capacitive sensor, force sensor, light-based sensor, or other input component. The fabric-based item may include fabric such as woven fabric or knit fabric. Strands of conductive material may serve as signals paths for supplying current to conductive strands in actuators. Magnetic-field-based actuators may be formed by coiling conductive strands around tubular support structures such as piping in fabric-based items.

摘要: A shielded seating assembly configured to shield a user from projectiles includes a seat. A brace is coupled to a bottom of the seat. The brace is configured to support the seat in a substantially horizontal position above a surface upon which the brace is positioned. A panel is coupled to is the seat and is configured to extend upwardly from the seat and down to the surface upon which the brace is positioned. 摘要: Paper-based elongate structures suitable for use as lumber substitutes, articles of manufacture made thereof, kits of materials including such structures, and machines and methods for making the same. Elongate structures according to the invention include a hollow outer portion formed of corrugated fiberboard sheet material and an accordion-folded inner support formed of corrugated fiberboard sheet material. The hollow outer portion has four outer surfaces that define a rectangle when viewed in cross-section transverse to a longitudinal axis of the elongate structure. The accordion-folded inner support is enclosed within the hollow outer portion. The inner support includes a plurality of first spaced-apart peaks that contact a first inner surface of the hollow outer portion and a plurality of second spaced-apart peaks that contact an opposing second inner surface of the hollow outer portion. The accordion-folded inner support structure improves the beam strength, crush resistance and lateral strength of the elongate structure.

摘要: Among other things, a piece of furniture is formed from three separate precut pieces of flat cardboard. A first one of the pieces has a bottom edge to rest on a floor with the first piece rising vertically from the bottom edge and has at least one slot at an upper edge of the first piece. A second one of the pieces has a bottom edge to rest on the floor with the second piece rising from the bottom edge and having at least one slot at an upper edge of the second piece. A third one of the pieces has a crease across the piece and at least two slots along at least one edge that is parallel to the fold. The piece of furniture is formed by mating the one slot in the first piece with one of the slots of the third piece, folding the third piece of cardboard at the crease, and mating the one slot in the second piece with another one of the slots of the third piece, with the third piece folded along the crease.
