Abstract: A blood pump system includes a first implantable housing, an implantable blood pump independent from the first implantable housing, and a percutaneous extension. The first implantable housing includes a rechargeable power storage device. The implantable blood pump supplements the pumping function of a heart. The rechargeable power storage device supplies electrical power to the implantable blood pump. The percutaneous extension is coupled to the rechargeable power storage device and adapted to traverse the skin. The percutaneous extension is configured to releasably connect to an external power supply adapted to provide power for recharging or supplementing the rechargeable power storage device to power the implantable blood pump.

Abstract: Mechanical circulatory supports configured to operate in series with the native heart are disclosed. In an embodiment, an intravascular propeller is installed into the descending aorta and anchored within via an expandable anchoring mechanism. The propeller and anchoring mechanism may be foldable so as to be percutaneously deliverable to the aorta. The propeller may have foldable blades. The blades may be magnetic and may be driven by a concentric electromagnetic stator circumferentially outside the magnetic blades. The stator may be intravascular or may be configured to be installed around the outer circumference of the blood vessel. The support may create a pressure rise between about 20-50 mmHg, and maintain a flow rate of about 5 L/min. The support may have one or more pairs of contra-rotating propellers to modulate the tangential velocity of the blood flow. The support may have static pre-swirlers and or de-swirlers. The support may be optimized to replicate naturally occurring vortex formation within the descending aorta.

Instead of providing a temporary solution for these patients, the devices may be permanently implanted. The devices linearly reciprocate a shuttle within a housing to move blood into and out of the housing, and rotate the shuttle to selectively direct the movement of blood into and out of a plurality of ports in the housing.

Abstract: A rotary pump housing having a cylindrical bore, a pumping chamber and a motor stator including an electrically conductive coil located within the housing and surrounding a portion of the cylindrical bore. A rotor has a cylindrical shaft with an impeller and one or more magnets located within the shaft that are responsive to the motor stator to drive actuation of the rotor. The housing bore is closely fitted to the outer surface of the shaft forming a hydrodynamic journal bearing with an annular clearance defining a leakage flow path. One or more of radial or axial thrust bearings may be provided to provide rotation stability to the rotor and flow within the leakage flow path. The relative orientation of positions of the inflow, outflow, and leakage flow paths may be varied within the pump, such as to accommodate different intended methods for implantation and/or use.

Abstract: The present invention helps in enabling cardiac recovery in patients with heart failure and for facilitating cardiac muscle regeneration by long term augmentation of the coronary perfusion pressure and thereby the coronary blood flow by using an implantable, preferably self-contained electrically operated pump which takes the oxygen rich blood from one of the chambers of the heart or a large blood vessel, that include the aorta, the subclavian artery, left atrium, one or more pulmonary veins, etc and pumps it into a singular or multitude of coronary arteries through a natural (autologous, homologous or heterologous) or synthetic ‘conduit’, a medium to long term inotropic support to the heart, through a dedicated channel to deliver inotropic and other medicines and stem cells directly into the coronary circulation, where one end of the channel typically ends outside the body and the other end rests inside the lumen of the ‘conduit’ which supplies the oxygenated blood into the coronary arteries; a central processing unit (CPU) with an integrated defibrillator to monitor and control pump speed and flow rates; an implantable power source for the pump which can be charged transcutaneously using an external wireless system (‘TET’: transcutaneous energy transfer systems), to power the pump and the CPU.
