An automatic line spacing device which can be advantageously incorporated in typewriters, especially of the type which has no constantly rotating power shaft. A feed pawl is mounted on a rockable member and cooperates with a ratchet to angularly rotate a typewriter type platen. The rockable member is constantly coupled to a bidirectional electric motor which is first energized sufficiently to angularly rotate the rockable member from its home position to a rotated limit position defined by a fixed positive stop element for effecting a line spacing operation and then secondly energized sufficiently to rotate the rockable member back to its home position as defined by another stop element. A cam adjusts the angle during which the feed pawl engages the ratchet so as to effect different line spacing increments.

A line feed mechanism for use with high speed, lead screw driven printers, such as of the dot matrix type, utilizes a solenoid with a dual pivotal armature to effect the coupling of a uniquely mounted and eccentrically displaceable platen gear to a lead screw connected gear. As such, single or multiple platen controlled line feeding is effected in a manner which is correlated with the linear advancement of the carriage-mounted and lead screw-driven print head. The pivotal armature, when actuated, is also employed to hold a detent lever out of engagement with a ratchet wheel associated with the platen during multiple line feeding. This advantageously obviates the "clatter" sound otherwise generated, with but one solenoid being required for both variable line feeding and ratchet wheel release. As the stepping motor for the lead screw may be readily controlled for bi-directional rotation, so to may the silently operated platen be rotated, independently of carriage position, so as to allow various specialized printing and line scanning operations to be performed.

A method and apparatus prevents the overheating of a line feed motor used in a printer. First and second timers are respectively provided to measure first and second time intervals. The second time interval includes a cessation period in which the line feed motor is not driven to allow for heat dissipation of the line feed motor. At the end of the first time interval, a determination is made as to whether the number of line feed pulses during the first time interval exceeds a predetermined limit. If the number of line feed pulses does not exceed the predetermined limit, the first time is reactivated. If the number of line feed pulses does exceed the predetermined limit, then the second timer is activated to allow for heat dissipation of the line feed motor.

A linespacing apparatus includes a slip clutch assembly which is driven by an electric motor. The slip clutch assembly includes a face cam which drives a linkage which, in turn, indexes a platen in order to linespace the platen. The face cam includes an abutment portion which abruptly halts the motion of the linkage and the slip clutch assembly prevents bounce or recoil of the linkage thereby promoting smooth operation of the apparatus. The linkage may be adjusted by an operator to vary the amount of rotation of the platen during each operating stroke of the linkage.
