摘要: The invention includes systems and methods for melting materials to make glass and other materials subject to electric melting that improve the capacity of the melters and/or the melt quality and/or the melting costs and/or the life of tank melters. These systems and methods use one or more of boosting with one or more streams of super hot melt coming from one or more boosting melters, cooling one or more components of one or more of the melters normally cooled using water with a high temperature cooling fluid or fluid suspension and protecting the normally high wear areas of refractory linings by covering those high wear areas with one or more strips of a corrosion and oxidation resistant metal or alloy useful above 2400 degrees F.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for producing display quality glass sheets are provided in which the batch materials for making the sheets are melted in a furnace whose glass-engaging surfaces comprise zirconia (ZrO2). By using molybdenum electrodes, instead of the conventional tin electrodes, to electrically heat the molten glass, the wear rate per unit area of the furnace's glass-engaging, zirconia-containing surfaces are reduced by more than 50%, thus reducing zirconia levels (solid+dissolved) in the finished glass by at least a similar amount. As a consequence of this reduction, rejection rates of finished glass sheets are lowered, which is of particular value in the production of glass sheets of large dimensions, as desired by display manufacturers and other users of such sheets.

摘要: In a glass melting furnace, a combination includes a tank having an end chamber for containing a glass melt, the tank having soldier blocks arranged side-by-side which are of a refractory, mineral material and form a wall of the end chamber. The soldier blocks have an inner side facing the end chamber and an outer side facing away from the end chamber. The soldier blocks have a rectangular cross-section at least in a bottom region thereof and the soldier blocks reach upwardly above an established level line of the glass melt. The combination includes a plurality of cooling air nozzles which are directed at the outer side of a plurality of the soldier blocks. The soldier blocks individually have on their outer side recesses diminishing a thickness cross section in thickness direction. As corrosion of the soldier blocks progresses, refractory supplementary elements are insertable into the recesses. Each recess is disposed at an upper end of each soldier block. Each soldier block is step shaped with at least two steps by which the cross section of the soldier blocks is reduced abruptly in an upwardly direction. The combination includes supplementary elements for steps of the soldier blocks. The supplementary elements are complimentary to the recesses. The supplementary elements are insertable successively in the recesses and the supplementary elements are a material corrosion-resistant to glass.

摘要: A method for manufacturing glass wherein raw material is fed as a batch to a continuous glass-melting tank furnace, melted in a melting tank and passed to a refining tank via a submerged throat. The melt is heated in the refining tank to de-gas it, and then molten refined glass is delivered to a conditioning tank where it is brought to a desired working temperature. The refining tank is divided into upstream and downstream refining cells by a transverse sill. The melt in the upstream refining cell is heated to create a spring zone located towards the downstream end of that cell and a circulation of melt in that cell which feeds the spring zone.

摘要: A method and apparatus for continuously melting and refining molten glass are disclosed which comprises the steps of applying a preponderance of heat to a molten glass mass by Joule effect heating and pulsating a portion of the heat applied to the molten glass mass such that the temperature of the surface molten glass is increased and the temperature of the molten glass being withdrawn is reduced and the total energy supplied to the furnace is reduced. An electric circuit means comprising at least two interconnected electrodes is pulsated on and off at predetermined time intervals in order to establish the desired temperature profile within the molten glass mass.
