The invention disclosed is a hydrogel composition for use as dural substitute, for wound closure of cleft palate and regeneration, and as substrate for cell delivery to the eye. The hydrogel is made of a copolymer of (a) an N-substituted (meth)acrylamide, and (b) a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate, which is covalently crosslinked with dimethacrylate monomers. The swollen, gel is in the form of a sheet or membrane that is readily sterilisable, being homogeneous or heterogeneous, non-degradable, non resorbable, elastically deformable, and has an equilibrium water content of at least 50%.

Blends of polycarbonate and copolyester that are capable of being extrusion blow-molded are described. The blends preferably comprise (I) about 1 to 99% by weight of a linear or branched polycarbonate and (II) about 1 to 99% by weight of a mixture of (i) about 40 to 100% by weight of a first copolyester and (ii) about 0 to 60% by weight of a second copolyester. The first copolyester preferably comprises (A) diacid residues comprising terephthalic acid residues, (B) diol residues comprising about 45 to 75 mole percent of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) residues and about 25 to 55 mole percent of ethylene glycol residues, and (C) about 0.05 to 1.0 mole percent of the residue of a trifunctional monomer. The optional second copolyester preferably comprises (A) diacid residues comprising terephthalic acid residues and (B) diol residues comprising about 52 to 90 mole percent of CHDM residues and about 10 to 48 mole percent of ethylene glycol residues. Preferably, the average amount of CHDM residues in the copolyester mixture II ranges from 52 to 75 mole percent. It has been surprisingly found that the presence of the trifunctional residues in the first copolyester can impart sufficient melt strength for the blends to be extrusion blow-molded. Containers and shaped articles made from the blends as well as a method of making the articles are also described.

A method of making improved optical quality polymers by normalizing the polymerization rates of the components of the monomer mix used is presented. The polymers produced by this process minimize the formation of separate domains and decrease the level of grit in contact lenses made from the polymers. Monomer reaction rates can be normalized by conducting the polymerization at elevated temperature.

The present invention features a method for the formation of superporous hydrogels using an ion-equilibration technique. Anionic polysaccharides are included in the hydrogel reaction mixture and cations are introduced either during or after hydrogel formation. Properties of the resulting hydrogel can be subsequently adjusted by treating the cation-complexed gel with a different cation or cation mixture under equilibrating conditions. It has been found that by properly adjusting the cations and the sequence in which they are used in the equilibration process, superporous hydrogels can be formed that are highly absorbent while maintaining favorable structural properties, including strength, ruggedness, and resiliency. It has also been found that applying appropriate dehydration conditions to them after their formation can further stabilize the superporous hydrogels formed by the method of the invention.

The present invention comprises a method of making a polyethylene/methylane terephthalate copolymer with more desirable properties by the incorporation of a minor percentage of poly(methylene) components. Applicants have found, as demonstrated herein, that a small amount of this poly(methylene terephthalate) incorporated into the poly/ethylene terephthalate) serves to drastically depress the melting point. Such depression of melting points will make the production of fibers from melting polymers less expensive. Applicants have also found that the mixture with the depressed melting point has apparently less adherence to the surfaces of the equipment used to handle such molten polymers.
