Abstract:
The invention provides a novel chlorine-free modified polyolefin resin composition with excellent adherence to nonpolar substrates, with excellent solubility into solvent and compatibility with other resins, and with no tack after painting and drying. It relates to a modified polyolefin resin composition obtainable by graft modifying a mixed resin comprising 40 to 99 parts by weight of polyolefin resin (A) and 1 to 60 parts by weight of ethylenic compound-unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer (B) that contains 0.1 to 50% by weight of unsaturated carboxylic acid derivative, with unsaturated carboxylic acid derivative and/or its anhydride (C), the modified polyolefin resin composition having weight average molecular weight of 20,000 to 150,000 and the grafting weight of (C) being 0.1 to 20% by weight.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to water-soluble, acid groups-containing graft copolymers which are at least partially biodegradable and are based on polyhydroxy compounds and monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, sulfonic acids and/or phosphonic acids or the salts of said acids as well as optional further monomers. The present invention further relates to a process for producing said graft copolymers at temperatures of up to 200.degree. C. by means of radical polymerization initiators, in that a total mixture is polymerized which consists of 1-60%-wt. of polyhydroxy compounds, their derivatives or their mixtures, and 95-40%-wt. of a monomer mixture comprising at least one monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, at least one monoethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid, one monoethylenically unsaturated sulfuric acid ester and/or vinylphosphonic acid or the salts of said acids with monovalent cations, as well as optional further monomers. The present invention further relates to the use of the graft copolymers in aqueous systems, for binding multivalent metal ions, inhibiting the water hardness, as additive in detergents and cleaning agents, as textile auxiliary, dispersing agent, in particular for pigments, and as auxiliary agent in the production of paper and leather.
Abstract:
Aqueous emulsions of grafted polymer compositions are provided. The grafted component of these compositions has two or more polymeric substituents. The aqueous emulsions of grafted polymer compositions are particularly useful as cement modifiers.
Abstract:
Polymerization of acrylic or methacrylic acid and a water-soluble acrylic or methacrylic acid salt in the presence of a carboxyl group-containing polyvinyl alcohol resin gives highly water-absorbing resins with the water absorbency, water absorption rate, water insolubility and other characteristics well balanced therein.
Abstract:
Methods are provided for making reversible crosslinked polymers. Exemplary methods comprise reacting first and second thermoplastic polymers having non-hindered olefins in the presence of a metathesis catalyst under conditions sufficient to form a crosslinked polymer. In certain embodiments, the methods comprise providing a crosslink promoting additive to improve the strength of the crosslinked polymer. In some embodiments, the methods comprise decrosslinking a crosslinked polymer through a metathesis or an ozonolysis reaction.
Abstract:
This invention is directed to a processing approach for the rapid and efficient in-situ polymerization of specially prepared precursor mixtures to achieve near-net-shape production of objects/articles with exact dimensions. The process relies on the use of polymerizable compositions comprised of a mixture of a dead polymer, a reactive plasticizer and, optionally, an initiator, which compositions are semi-solid-like prior to curing and induce low shrinkage upon curing as a result of their partially polymerized nature prior to processing. The partially polymerized nature of the precursor mixtures also allows extremely impact-resistant objects/articles to be fabricated. Other desirable engineering property attributes can similarly be achieved via the judicious blending of starting ingredients in formulating the polymerizable (curable) mixtures.
Abstract:
Compositions comprising macromers having a backbone comprising units having a 1,2-diol and/or 1,3-diol structure for tissue bulking and coating. Such polymers include poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and hydrolyzed copolymers of vinyl acetate, for example, copolymers with vinyl chloride, N-vinylpyrrolidone, etc. The backbone polymer contains pendant chains bearing crosslinkable groups and, optionally, other modifiers. When crosslinked, the macromers form hydrogels having many properties advantageous for use as agents to hulk and coat tissues.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to new hydrogels with improved mechanical properties and methods of their preparation. The hydrogels are formed from hydrophilic polymers having function hydroxyl groups and have low elasticity modulus typically less than about 10 kPa, a tensile strength above 1 MPa, an elongation above 50% which makes suitable as medical implants, in particular intraocular lenses. The hydrogels are prepared by a crosslinking method with a comparatively low concentration of hydrophilic polymer of a sufficiently high molecular weight dissolved in a good solvent.
Abstract:
The present invention is a hydrolytically modified, biodegradable polymer and a method of making a hydrolytically modifiable a biodegradable polymer. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is a method of grafting polar groups onto biodegradable polymers and modified biodegradable polymer compositions produced by the method. The polymer compositions are useful as components in flushable and degradable articles. Water-sensitive polymer blends and method of making those polymer blends are also disclosed.
