The present invention relates to biomass resin composition comprising a phenolized biomass substance and a reactive substance having a melting point of at most 100° C. other than phenol. The biomass resin composition is prepared by a process, which comprises adding a reactive substance such as a phenol derivative or drying oil into the reaction system, in the step of preparing a phenolized biomass substance by phenolizing a biomass substance with a phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The present invention provides a biomass resin composition, in which the melting point can be freely controlled and which is excellent in properties such as flowability, processability, water resistance and impact resistance and can be prepared by a simple process, and a process for preparing the same.

A method is provided for producing a painted article comprising: (a) preparing a lignin solution comprising lignin and a dye or pigment; (b) mixing the lignin solution with a phenol oxidizing enzyme; (c) incubating the mixture from said step (b) under conditions and for a time sufficient to form a solution of a desired viscosity; (d) contacting or spreading the mixture from the step (c) on an article to be painted; and (e) allowing the mixture to set onto the article by subjecting the article to conditions and for a time sufficient to form a paint on the surface of the article.

The invention is a method of producing surfactants from lignin which comprises subjecting lignin to two reactions, alkylation with an alkyl chain having about 3 to about 24 carbon atoms at phenolic sites, and oxidation sufficient to break the lignin into smaller polymeric and monomeric units. The invention also includes using these lignin surfactants in surfactant floods for enhanced oil recovery.

Modified phenol-formaldehyde resins, and processes for their preparation, are described wherein board or paper pulping process waste liquor is used as the modifier. The resins may contain, based on solids contents of both resin and waste liquor, from 1:10 to 10:1 parts by weight. These resins are cheaper than conventional resins and also use the waste-liquor without any purification step.

Ligno-novolak resins, either in the form of physical blends of lignin and novolak resins or as synthetically derived from the reaction of lignin, phenol and an aldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst, are provided. The resins, including the physical blends, are curable to thermoset, substantially completely cross-linked resins in which the lignin is interreacted and cross linked through the action of a curing agent such as hexamethylenetetramine. The resins are useful in the production of molding compounds that exhibit properties that are at least comparable to those of compounds derived from novolak resins. Moreover, excellent heat deflection temperatures and superior electrical properties are exhibited by such molding compounds.

A process for the production of low molecular weight phenolic compounds from lignins through the pyrolysis of the lignins in the presence of a strong base. In a preferred embodiment, potassium hydroxide is present in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 5% by weight, the pyrolysis temperature is from about 400.degree. C. to about 600.degree. C. at atmospheric pressure, and the time period for substantial completion of the reaction is from about 1-3 minutes. Examples of low molecular weight phenolic compounds produced include methoxyphenols, non-methoxylated phenols, and mixtures thereof.

A process for making a water-insoluble, graft copolymer of lignite-(ethene or substituted ethene monomer) having a central lignite network and at least one grafted side chain, R, having "m" repeating units of (1-phenylethylene), 1-methyl-1-(1-oxo-2-oxypropyl)ethylene, a polymerized 2-methyl-3-oxo-4-oxybut-1-ene-(p-ethoxy-(3*p+3)-ol, or any other substituted ethene monomer which has a dipole moment of less than 1.2 or a water solubility of less than 5 g/100 g water at 30.degree. C. The ethene monomer forms the sidechain by free radical polymerization and, in the sidechain, m and p vary from 1 to 300,000 such that the central lignite network has a molecular weight of about 1,000 to 1,500,000; the total number of random units in a grafted side chain is in the range of 1 to 300,000 units; and the total number of sidechains attached to lignite, x, is in the range of 1 to 500; such that the total copolymer molecular weight is in the range of 1,500 to 30,000,000. This process makes a material which is a hard, strong, thermoplastic that can be molded, cast, and extruded into parts, equipment, and consumer items.

An amine-modified lignosulfonate is formed from a water-soluble basic amine and a water-soluble lignosulfonate salt. The amine-modified lignosulfonate is incorporated into a phenol-formaldehyde resole resin to provide a binder particularly suitable for mineral fiber insulation mats.
