THE ACTION OF AN AGENT FOR CASING SOLID PARTICLES OF ASPHALT TO ENTER INTO AND FORM A STABLE SUSPENSION IN WATER-BASE DRILLING FLUID IS IMPROVED BY PREHYDRATING THE AGENT AND DISSOLVING THE PREHYDRATED AGENT IN NORMAL PROPANOL AND WATER BEFORE USE. THE ASPHALT-STABILIZING AGENT MAY BE A LIMITD CLASS OF ETHOXYALTED ALKYL PHENOLS OR ETHOXYLATED POLYPROPYLENE GLYCOLS. THE MONOBUTYL ETHER OF ETHYLENE GLYCOL OR OF DIETHYLENE GLYCOL CAN BE SUED IN PLACE OF NORMAL PROPANOL.
Abstract:
Novel epoxides in the form of esters or polyesters of 4,5-epoxy-1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid, and functional fluid compositions containing said epoxides, such functional fluids consisting essentially of (1) a phosphate ester, e.g., dibutyl phenyl phosphate, or an amide of an acid of phosphorus, (2) a viscosity index improver, e.g., a polyglycol or polyglycol ether, or polyacrylate or polymethacrylate viscosity index improver, and (3) a small amount of the above novel epoxide, e.g., poly(ethylene-.DELTA..sup.4 -epoxy tetrahydrophthalate), such epoxide preventing acid build-up in the fluid, and preventing undesirable deposits particularly when such fluid is employed as an aircraft hydraulic fluid.

A FLUID LOSS CONTROL AGENT IS DISCLOSED INCLUDING SOLUBILIZED NUCLEOPROTEIN SUCH AS FROM FISH MILT, OR AVIAN BLOOD. THE FLUID LOSS CONTROL AGENT MAY BEINCLUDED IN AQUEOUS FLUIDS USED IN OIL AND GAS WELLS. SUCH AQUEOUS FLUIDS INCLUDE DRILLING MUDS, COMPLETION FLUIDS AD HYDRAULIC FRACTURING FLUIDS.
Abstract:
In well drilling operations, loss of whole drilling fluid to drilled formations is decreased by maintaining in the drilling fluid a three-component mix. The three components are (1) Ground nutshells or equivalent passing the shale shaker screen but retained on a No. 100 U.S. standard sieve; (2) Nutshell flour or equivalent passing a No. 100 sieve; (3) Sugar cane fibers, preferably waterproofed, ground fine enough to pass the shale shaker screen but coarse enough to seal a bed of BB shot when combined within certain limits with the larger granular particles and the flour.

A MINERAL-OIL-BASED LUBRICANT FOR USE IN DRILLING OF MINERAL ORE DEPOSITS, WHICH IS NON-STAINING TOWARDS SAMPLE CORES WITHDRAWN DURING THE DRILLING, CAN BE PREPARED BY COMBINING A PARAFFINIC OIL, WITH MINOR AMOUNTS OF A NONIOMIC EMULSIFIER PACKAGE AND A SULFUR-CONTAINING EXTREME PRESSURE AGENT. THE NONIONIC EMULSIFIER PACKAGE CAN BE A COMBINATION OF AN ALKOXYLATED FATTY ACID ESTER AND AN ALKOXYLATED ALKYL PHENOL OR A COMBINATION OF FATTY ACID SORBITAN POLYESTERS WHICH HAVE BEEN ALKOXYLATED TO VARYING EXTENTS.
