    Abstract: A pressure differential-driven engine comprises an outer pressurizable enclosure and an actuator enclosure, disposed within the outer enclosure. An actuator is disposed within the actuator enclosure and a portion of the actuator and the actuator enclosure cooperatively define a pressurizable cavity cyclable between a first, high pressure state, and a second, low pressure state. The actuator and actuator enclosure are collectively restrained by at least one rail to linear, slidable motion within the outer enclosure. The engine is operable to output usable energy as the pressurizable cavity cycles between the first and second pressure states.

    Abstract: A hydraulic driving mechanism for a vehicle wheel includes a housing and three piston-cylinder assemblies pivoted to side plates of the housing. Each assembly communicates with hydraulic fluid under pressure and a reciprocating piston rod of each assembly drives a pinion through a surrounding eccentric and driving ring when the assembly is rocked in an arc about its pivot connection. The assemblies and corresponding pinions are located around and in mesh with the outer periphery of a central pinion which is affixed to an output shaft to rotate the wheel. The rocking of each assembly causes a sliding valve within a control valve housing to open and close return and inlet fluid ducts. An anchorage links each sliding valve to the housing for the mechanism. The housing affords the connection between the wheel and the vehicle frame and includes two spaced-apart plates with strips between the plates that leave upper and lower blocks. The blocks hold king pins for steering the wheels and comprise ducts for inlet and return ducts for each assembly.

    Abstract: In its simplest form an oscillating steam engine is limited to low pressure operation by a spring or set screw holding the cylinder against a stationary valve plate. This invention features trunnions not rigidly connected to the oscillating cylinder and pressure equalizing cylinder, making possible a wide and rapid variation of steam pressure and temperature with minimal valve and pressure equalizing cylinder leakage and trunnion friction and misalignment. In a compound or multiple expansion engine, high pressure steam can be fed to the low pressure cylinder for starting the engine or for increasing the power output. Automatic condensate relief is also provided for without separate manually operated valves.

    Abstract: This radial-piston, stationary-block, variable displacement motor or pump has special features that enable it to operate far beyond the operating pressure and speed ranges of current hydrostatic motors. Hydrostatic bearings or shoes with multiple recesses at the base of each piston bear on a variable eccentric attached to the output shaft of the motor. The bearing recesses are supplied through two sets of orifices, one set open at all times and the other set open a greater proportion of the time at high-speed, low-stroke operation than at low-speed, high-stroke operation. Valving is done by spool valves driven by a shaftmounted eccentric of fixed eccentricity, adjustable as to phase. The cylinders have spherical bearing surfaces and are so mounted that the entire cylinder can undergo the oscillating motion required to maintain the piston''s centerline alignment with the center of the eccentric.

    Abstract: A pump or motor having a cylindrical housing member and a shaft member extending coaxially therethrough. The shaft member carries shaft vanes which project radially from the shaft member into close proximity with an inner cylindrical surface of the cylindrical housing member while the cylindrical housing member carries cylinder vanes which are fixed to the cylinder housing member and project therefrom radially toward and into close proximity with the shaft member. The ends of the shaft vanes are fixed with a pair of circular flanges which have outer peripheral edges next to the inner surface of the cylindrical member, these flanges extending across the opposed ends of the cylinder vanes. Axially extending sealing members extend along the outer edges of the shaft vanes between the latter and the inner surface of the cylinder member while annular sealing members extend along the peripheral edges of the flanges engaging the latter and the inner surface of the cylinder member. The cylinder vanes are each provided with a substantially U-shaped sealing member extending axially along the shaft member between the latter and each cylinder vane and also extending radially along the opposed ends of each cylinder vane between the latter and the flanges.

    Abstract: A fluid working machine comprises a controller and a working chamber of cyclically varying volume having an electronically controllable primary low pressure valve and a secondary low pressure port associated therewith, each of which is openable and closable in phased relation to cycles of working chamber volume to bring the working chamber into fluid communication with a low pressure manifold.
