摘要: A catalytic converter for a small engine and a method for manufacturing the same include a honeycomb body coated with catalytically active material and made from at least partly structured layers of sheet metal with channels for the passage of exhaust gas. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, the honeycomb body is placed in a silencer housing disposed in the proximity of the engine, in such a way that at least a predominant portion of exhaust gas of the small engine has to flow through the honeycomb body. The honeycomb body is a layered, wound or folded stack of sheet metal layers, which is squeezed into the silencer housing, plastically deforming at least 10% and preferably 20 to 30% of the channels, so that it completely fills at least a partial volume of the housing. Due to the considerable plastic distortion of a part of the channels, there is also a high degree of elastic deformation in the rest of the honeycomb body, which also ensures the stability of the honeycomb body, even under varying thermal stresses.

摘要: A double-walled housing, in particular for exhaust gas catalytic converters of motor vehicles, includes an inner jacket and an outer jacket approximately concentrically surrounding and spaced apart from the inner jacket. The inner and outer jackets rest tightly against one another at both end surfaces. The inner jacket is kept under compressive strain at least at two end regions by constrictions of the outer jacket. The outer jacket has embossed features oriented toward the inner jacket. The housing is produced by deforming the inner jacket by rolling a metal sheet into cylindrical or conical form while maintaining a parting line. The outer jacket is deformed by rolling a metal sheet into cylindrical or conical form and by connecting mutually meeting edges by a joining technique. The inner jacket is disposed in the outer jacket and the outer jacket is plastically deformed inward over its entire circumference on both end surfaces in such a way that the inner jacket is kept under compressive strain. The outer jacket is provided beforehand or simultaneously with embossed features oriented toward the inner jacket.

摘要: A honeycomb body, which is composed in such a manner that a strip of corrugated foil made of heat-resistant stainless steel containing aluminum and a strip of flat foil made of stainless steel are alternately wound or laminated on each other, is incorporated into an outer cylinder made of metal and integrated into one body by means of diffusion bonding, so that a diffusion bonded metallic catalyst carrier can be formed. Surface roughness of the strip of foil after the completion of diffusion bonding is 0.001 to 2.0 &mgr;m when it is expressed by center line average height Ra, and no sintered bridges are formed at both end portions of the diffusion bonded section in the longitudinal direction. The catalyst carrier is manufactured in a condition so that &lgr;b, which is defined by &lgr;b=6.8×10−12×&dgr;f−1×F1/2×Ra−1/2×T1/4×exp(15000/T)×b1/2, can be in a range from 8 to 20 where thickness of the strip of foil is &dgr;f (m), average roughness of the foil surface is Ra (m), back tension in the case of winding is F (kgf), contact width of the piece of flat foil with the piece of corrugated foil is b (m), heat treatment temperature is T (K), and degree of vacuum is Pout (Pa), under the condition that 7.52×109×exp(−35000/T)≧8×Pout.

摘要: A heater unit includes a metallic casing, and a honeycomb heater held in the casing via a metallic holding member, comprising a metallic honeycomb structure having a large number of parallel passages extending in the direction of the flow of an exhaust gas passing through the heater unit and at least one electrode for electrical heating of the honeycomb structure, attached to the honeycomb structure. In the heater unit, the holding member has such a structure as (1) is fitted to part of the outer surface of the honeycomb heater to allow the honeycomb heater to have a stable shape and (2) substantially blocks the flow path of exhaust gas between the honeycomb heater and the casing. This heater unit can withstand severe operating conditions such as experienced in automobiles; moreover, in this heater unit, the by-pass flow of exhaust gas is made substantially zero and the whole exhaust gas can pass through the honeycomb heater.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for reducing the TPM level of a diesel engine exhaust stream by providing a suitable oxidation catalyst into the exhaust train. The oxidation catalyst may be incorporated into a thermal insulative coating on the inner surface of the exhaust train, particularly the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipes prior to the turbocharger. Alternatively, when the exhaust train includes a turbocharger, the catalyst can be in a separate monolithic unit between the engine and the turbocharger. The system may also include an improved diesel oxidation catalyst unit having a metal monolithic substrate. The oxidation catalyst can also be incorporated into a thermal insulative coating inside the cylinders, particularly on non-rubbing surfaces such as The invention also includes the use of a protective mullite top coat on the thermal coating. A further embodiment is the use of a stainless steel bond coat to bind the thermal coating to a metallic substrate, particularly an aluminum substrate.

摘要: A two stroke cycle engine 10 with an exhaust gas treatment catalyst. Separate reducing and oxidizing catalyst portions 126 and 127 are provided to treat different portions of the exhaust gas exhausted during each exhaust period. The portion of the exhaust gas high in NOx, usually that first exhausted upon initial opening of the exhaust port, is directed to be treated by the reducing catalysts 126 and the remainder of the exhaust gas is directed to be treated by the oxidizing catalyst 127.
