Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for identifying and/or authenticating a sample, comprising adding at least one chemical compound to the sample, determining a level of the at least one compound after addition to the sample; comparing the level of the at least one compound to a reference level and identifying the sample based on the comparison with the reference sample and the effect of the sample on the level of the at least one compound. The invention further relates to the use of the at least one compound in the method for identifying and/or authenticating a sample. Further, the invention relates to the use of a kit comprising the at least one compound in the inventive method. In addition, the invention relates to a composition comprising the at least one compound. Further, the invention relates to a kit comprising the compositions provided herein, e.g. for calibrating the methods provided herein and/or the instruments employed in the methods provided herein.

Abstract: Methods of characterizing a test subject's risk of having or developing cardiovascular disease are provided. The methods include using an analytic device to determine levels of choline-related trimethylamine-containing compounds such as trimethylamine N-oxide, choline, or betaine in a biological sample obtained from the subject and comparing the levels of the choline-related trimethylamine-containing compound in the subject's biological sample to a control value. The test subject's risk of having cardiovascular disease is then characterized as higher if the levels of the choline-related trimethylamine-containing compound are higher than the control value. Also provided are methods of identifying a subject at risk of experiencing a complication of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and methods of evaluating the efficacy of a cardiovascular therapeutic agent in a subject with cardiovascular disease using levels of choline-related trimethylamine-containing compounds.

Abstract: A method of automatically tracking urine in a toilet includes creating a background image of an interior of a toilet bowl using an image sensor, wherein the background image shows the interior of the toilet bowl. The method also includes acquiring an image of the interior of the toilet bowl using the image sensor, wherein the acquired image shows urine and a collecting and tracking member in the interior of the toilet bowl. The method further includes producing a difference image that shows a difference between the acquired image and the background image, and processing the difference image to identify a location of the urine and the collecting and tracking member, and moving the collecting and tracking member to the identified location of the urine.

Abstract: The present invention provides a test paper box and a smart toilet containing same. The test paper box comprises a support and a housing arranged at the outside of the support. The support comprises a base and an elongated cavity arranged at the base for storing test paper. The base is provided with a through hole arranged at a location corresponding to a bottom surface of the elongated cavity. A paper-receiving slot is arranged below the through hole. The paper-receiving slot is fixed to the bottom of the base to receive the bottommost piece of test paper exposed from the elongated cavity, and the paper-receiving slot is provided with a paper outlet. The test paper box can be attached and detached conveniently, delivers test paper smoothly, can be replaced easily, has low costs, and is suitable for smart toilets.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for use with feces of a subject that are disposed within a toilet bowl. One or more light sensors receive light from the toilet bowl, while the feces are disposed within the toilet bowl. A computer processor detects a set of three or more spectral components that have a characteristic relationship with each other in a light spectrum of bile, by analyzing the received light, and detects a presence of bile within the feces, in response to detecting the set of three or more spectral components. The computer processor generates an output in response thereto. Other applications are also described.
