The present invention relates to the use of an image capture system having an electronic camera for platenless document imaging. The system comprises: an electronic camera with an electronic detector and a lens with a field of view for imaging on the detector a portion of a document; a support by which the camera can be positioned to view the document; an actuator for moving the camera field of view so that a plurality of overlapping image tiles of a document can be captured at predetermined different locations over the support surface, each image tile having an array of tile data points and being subject to some expected perspective and/or camera distortion relative to the support surface; and a processor by which the plurality of image tiles may be joined into a composite image of the document. The processor includes a memory which stores transform data for each image tile, the transform data relating both to the expected distortion and to the predetermined overlap between image tiles. The processor is adapted to use the transform data to generate from the tile data points a corrected array of tile data points with the distortion corrected and with the corrected image tiles correctly overlapped to form a composite image of the document.

The system includes a scanner for generating an image data stream representing an electronic image of the image on the input document and an edge detecting circuit for detecting edge data within the image data stream. A circuit detects a first corner of a leading edge of the input document based on the detected edge data and for establishing a first coordinate value therefrom and a second corner of a leading edge of the input document based on the detected edge data and for establishing a second coordinate value therefrom. The system further determines a minimum and maximum location for a leading edge of the scanned document and determines a minimum and maximum location for a trailing edge of the scanned document. An image window is generated representing valid image data to processed and rendered based on the minimum and maximum location for a leading edge of the scanned document, the minimum and maximum location for a trailing edge of the scanned document, the first coordinate value, and the second coordinate value.

An image forming device includes a backing and is arranged for a media to be positioned against the backing. The backing includes an embedded backing pattern. The media is skewed with respect to the scanning, thus defining a media skew. The media and the backing are scanned to form a pixel pattern. For each pixel, an included pattern recognition algorithm determines when the pixel represents the backing. When the pixel represents the backing, it is replaced with a replacement backing symbol, otherwise it is replaced with a replacement media symbol. The pixel determining and symbol replacing process is continued for remaining pattern pixels to form a replacement symbol pattern comprised of the replacement backing symbols and the replacement media symbols. The media is then processed based on the replacement symbol pattern, the processing including detecting the media skew, registering the media, or both.

The morphing is performed by apparatus containing an outline extractor, for receiving two target figures for the morphing process and for extracting a set of outlines for each of the target figures; an outline tree generator and an outline tree arrangement unit, for retaining one specific outline of each of the two sets of outlines and for deleting the other outlines; an outline editor, for performing a smoothing process for the two outlines for the target figures that are retained by the outline tree arrangement unit in order to prevent self-intersection during the morphing process; and a sequence generator and a morphing viewer, for performing the morphing process in response to the progress made by the smoothing process performed by the smoothing processor.

Preferably, the sensor is tested to find blemish positions and a shift is calculated that minimizes the number of blemish positions that superimpose between the two pixel positions.

The method includes setting command signals which provide different distances from a reference point to at least three other points; outputting an image pattern which indicates reference coordinates of the reference point and distant measurement coordinates of the at least three points; optically reading the image pattern; obtaining data of the reference coordinates and the distant measurement coordinates from the read image pattern; calculating each distance between the obtained reference coordinates and the obtained distance measurement coordinates and outputting output signals which respectively provide the calculated distances; and calculating based on the command signals and the output signals, an S/N ratio for indicating a degree of dispersion of the output signals with respect to the command signals and a sensitivity of the output signals with respect to the command signals.
