The opening/closing mechanism and the disengaging device are held in a common casing. As a result, an impact force, produced at the time of closing the contact between two contacts by the toggle link mechanism, is transmitted through the casing, so that such a mistrip can be prevented.

The base member has a central bore having a tapered portion and which is surrounding by a channel. A bayonet cylinder occupies the channel and has circumferential bayonet slots which receive eccentric locking pins therein. An adjustable collet chuck has a tapered portion at one end that bears against the tapered bore in the base member and a second tapered portion at the other end. An axial free play nut having a tapered bore, which is adapted to bear against the second taper, is threaded into the bayonet cylinder, and rotation thereof produces through the tapers, a radial force to compress the central bore of the chuck to grip the workpiece. Rotation of the actuating pins flexes the bayonet beam to lock the workpiece in place within the chuck.

Micron scale dielectric items are manipulated by methods and apparatus taking advantage of spatially non-uniform field. Such fields give rise to a force on dielectric items, directing them generally toward regions of more concentrated field. The electrode may be elongated, either unitary, with a generally planar counter electrode, or dual, such as parallel pins, loops or plates. If dual, particles are generally attracted to regions of high field concentration, including tips, edges and spaces between electrode conductors. Items can be granular, threadlike, or sheets, and microelectronic parts and other shapes. Items can also be collected directly into a recess of a pharmaceutical material delivery microchip, with a conductive membrane of the microchip acting as a manipulating electrode. Items are attracted without regard to their surface charge, or the polarity of the field, which can be AC or DC. Charging, or knowing the charge of items to be manipulated is not necessary. The amount of material collected can be precisely controlled by varying parameters of collection, such as distance between the electrode and the items, distance between dual conductors, size (diameter, length) of the conductors, any dielectric sheathing thereof, and voltage. Elongated electrodes can be used to manipulate items into and from recesses, such as wells of microtitre trays, microchips, and semiconductor chips. Several recesses can be used to calibrate an array of collecting and depositing electrodes and deposits. Items can be removed from fluids, such as aerosol dispersions, and an air cleaner is also disclosed. Dielectrophoretic forces are exploited. Techniques and apparatus for depositing such items include charged targets and targets with electrodes designed to create a non-uniform field.

An electric field sensing transmission electrode (2) generates a first electric field (11, 12, 13) that induces a current in an electric field sensing reception electrode (4). A passive object (10) is sensed from variation in this current. An active object (31; 51; 71) comprises a further electric field sensing transmission electrode (33; 53; 73) and generates a second electric field (35, 36, 37; 55, 56, 57; 75, 76, 77). This may be generated by the active object (31) coupling with and applying a phase shift to the first electric field (11, 12, 13). Alternatively the second electric field (55, 56, 57) may be generated at a different frequency to the first electric field (11, 12, 13). Alternatively the second electric field (75, 76, 77) may be generated by the active object (71) coupling with an alternating magnetic field generated by a coil (172). The second electric field (35, 36, 37; 55, 56, 57; 75, 76, 77) induces a current in the electric field sensing reception electrode (4) that varies with the position of the active object (31; 51; 71). The separate currents are distinguished by virtue of their different phase or frequency.

The static electricity removal apparatus comprises at least one discharge electrode assembly including a plurality of needle-shaped electrodes aligned with each other, each of the needle-shaped electrodes generating ions using a corona discharge under the condition that it is provided with a high-frequency high AC voltage, a ground electrode for inducing ion generation by each of the needle-shaped electrodes, and a high-frequency high voltage generation unit connected to the discharge electrode assembly, the voltage generation unit generating the high-frequency high AC voltage to be provided to each of the needle-shaped electrodes of the discharge electrode assembly.
