    摘要: The object of the present invention is to provide an optical module for a WDM communication system, in which the oscillation wavelength is on the grid of the WDM regulation. The optical output power and the oscillation wavelength can be controlled independently. The present module includes a semiconductor light-emitting device, a wedge shaped etalon device and two light-receiving devices. The etalon contains a second portion, on which anti-reflection films are coated, and a first portion. One of the receiving devices detects light transmitted through the second portion of the etalon, while the other device detects light through the first portion. A signal from the former device controls the output power of the light-emitting device, while a signal from the latter receiving device controls the oscillation wavelength of the laser.

    摘要: An optical transceiver and method therefore provides a cooled laser diode configured to run in either a low power mode or a standard mode. A method for a thermo-electric cooler includes coupling the thermo-electric cooler to a laser diode, operating the thermo-electric cooler in one of a low power mode and a standard mode, and switching between the low power mode and the standard mode. The laser diode is configured to transmit signals in the low power mode and the standard mode. The low power mode maintains the laser diode at a temperature within a predetermined range of temperatures. The standard mode maintains the laser diode at a temperature that corresponds to a predetermined wavelength of light output from the laser diode. In one embodiment, the low power mode is a Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) mode and the standard mode is a Dense Wavelength Divison Multipexing (DWDM) mode. The optical transceiver includes a temperature circuit, a thermo-electric cooler coupled to the temperature circuit, and a laser diode coupled to the thermo-electric cooler. The thermo-electric cooler is responsive to inputs from the temperature circuit, the inputs identifying one of at least a first mode and a second mode, wherein a choice of mode is a function of a performance requirement. The optical transceiver includes a temperature circuit that includes a switch configured to alter the thermo-electric cooler between the first mode and the second mode.

    摘要: A method for tuning a laser via a temperature control loop that linearizes a non-linear characteristic of a thermal electric cooler (TEC) element used to adjust the temperature of tuning components and corresponding laser apparatus. One or more TEC elements are thermally coupled to respective tuning components, such as etalon filters. The TEC elements provide a heat transfer function (cooling rate) in response to a received electrical input (drive signal), wherein the relationship between the cooling rate and the drive signal is non-linear. An un-compensated drive signal produced by the control loop is compensated such that the open loop gain of the control loop is linearized via a linearizer control block. In effect, the non-linear transfer function of the TEC element is cancelled out by the linearizer control block to produce a linear relationship between the cooling rate and the drive signal. This open loop gain linearization enables tuning events such as channel slewing, and laser start-up operations to be performed with reduced tuning overshoots and undershoots that would otherwise result from the non-linear TEC transfer function characteristic.

    摘要: A sealed exhaust chemical oxygen-iodine laser (SECOIL) employing a sealed exhaust system (SES) is described. The SES is capable of selectively condensing and cryosorbing various chemical species contained in the laser-exhaust gas. Additionally, a condensable diluent is employed. The SES is configured so that the diluent and other condensables can be removed in a first stage with a high temperature condensing bed, while the oxygen can then be removed in a second stage in a low temperature sorbing bed. The result is a reduction in the weight, volume, and power consumption of the SECOIL system, especially the SES component thereof.

    摘要: The present invention is an optical turn used to the monitor the output of a light source such as a VCSEL. Light incoming to the optical turn is reflected off of a totally internally reflecting surface towards a window-mirror, where the light is partially routed to an output lens, and partially diverted to a monitor lens where the diverted light can be focused onto a monitoring device, such as a photodiode. In an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the optical turn is modified to monitor an incoming light array. In another alternative embodiment, the optical turn monitors an incoming light array, and further includes a zigzag multiplexer that is used to carry out Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM). CWDM is the combination of different wavelengths of light into one beam.
