摘要: In a digital audio broadcasting (DAB) system having a radio-frequency (RF) transmitter and a corresponding RF receiver, a system and method for providing improved frame synchronization is provided. In accordance with the preferred embodiment, the RF transmitter formats a DAB signal into a sequence of frames, each frame having a header with a predefined grouping of psuedo-random number sequences comprising 100 symbols. Of these 100 symbols, 86 symbols of the header preferable are used for frame synchronization and characterization of a communications channel, while the remaining 14 symbols are used for interleaver and data synchronization in an interleaved fashion. The formatted DAB signal, including the frame sequences, is transmitted to the receiver preferably using quadrature phase-shift keying modulation. At the receiver, a correlator, utilizing a synchronization detection algorithm, is generally designed to match a predetermined symbol pattern within the received signal. Once the frame synchronization is established, the channel is characterized and the data symbols are recovered.

摘要: A wireless base station architecture that is particularly well-suited for providing audio, video and data services. An exemplary embodiment preferably transmits to all of an area those "common services" (e.g., broadcast television) that are intended to be received by multiple recipients throughout the area, but, in contrast, transmits only into a sector those recipient-specific services (e.g., point-to-point voice services, interactive video services) that are intended for less than all of the recipients in the area. In an exemplary embodiment, a demultiplexor directs both broadcast video and recipient-specific or "sectorized" video signals to a video processor, which prepares them for transmission. The demultiplexor also directs sectorized audio signals to an audio processor/RF combiner, which prepares them for transmission. The video processor preferably directs the broadcast video signals to an antenna, which radiates the signal throughout the area, but directs the sectorized video signals to the audio processor/RF combiner. The audio processor/RF combiner combines the sectorized audio signals and the sectorized video signals before transmitting them to an antenna, which radiates the combined signal throughout the sector.

摘要: An audio-on-demand communication system provides real-time playback of audio data transferred via telephone lines or other communication links. One or more audio servers include memory banks which store compressed audio data. At the request of a user at a subscriber PC, an audio server transmits the compressed audio data over the communication link to the subscriber PC. The subscriber PC receives and decompresses the transmitted audio data in less than real-time using only the processing power of the CPU within the subscriber PC. According to one aspect of the present invention, high quality audio data compressed according to lossless compression techniques is transmitted together with normal quality audio data. According to another aspect of the present invention, metadata, or extra data, such as text, captions, still images, etc., is transmitted with audio data and is simultaneously displayed with corresponding audio data. The audio-on-demand system also provides a table of contents indicating significant divisions in the audio clip to be played and allows the user immediate access to audio data at the listed divisions. According to a further aspect of the present invention, servers and subscriber PCs are dynamically allocated based upon geographic location to provide the highest possible quality in the communication link.

摘要: The invention relates to the transmission of multimedia objects in a digital broadcasting system and particularly to the transmission of a reference system and the start-up procedure of a multimedia presentation according to the MHEG standard via a broadcasting system according to the DAB standard. According to the invention, the DAB ensemble according to the DAB standard and the service channel and fast information channel comprised by the DAB ensemble are handled as virtual, multiplexed MHEG objects, whereby they and the real MHEG objects positioned below them are referred to in a manner specified in the standard ISO/IEC 13522. In addition, information about start-up procedures relating to a multimedia program or a corresponding series of operations is transmitted in a special file, and a parameter in the file descriptor associated with said file indicates that said file contains instructions for said procedures.

The communication systems (100) includes a cable distribution network (106) with a base communications unit (102) and a number of downstream communications units (134) all connected to the cable distribution network (106). A plurality of channels are used to transmit data transmissions between the base communications unit (100) and the downstream communications unit (134). 摘要: A video distribution network having an architecture that distributes video services over a greater serving area. The broadcast consolidation section receives broadband data from a plurality of information providers, preferably as compressed, digital signals using asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) transport. The broadcast consolidation section combines the ATM streams from different information providers and outputs a consolidated signal onto a transport ring. The broadcast ring supplies the consolidated broadcast edit to a plurality of video network hubs, each of which downloads the consolidated broadcast data, converts the consolidated broadcast data to MPEG data on an RF carrier, and combines the RF signal with other RF signals before transmission by optical fiber to a plurality of local video access node. Each local video access node combines the RF broadcast data from the corresponding video access node with downstream IMTV traffic supplied by an ATM backbone subnetwork. The combined RF signals are output from the local video access nodes to the access of network servicing these subscribers. ATM demultiplexers in the video network hubs and the local video access nodes perform MPEG processing on received ATM cell streams, assign identification values, and output on broadband channels or narrowband signaling channels, on the basis of corresponding VPI/VCI values and downloaded routing information, resulting in efficient transport of signaling traffic and interactive data.

摘要: A system for voice and video distribution amongst a plurality of telephone subscriber locations operating on a broadband cable network. The subscriber locations are adapted to establish RF transmitting and receiving channels for carrying voice and signalling information and each further includes a tunable video signal generator and a tunable video signal receiver for coupling video signals to and from subscriber location video RF broadband channels of the cable network. A central switch is also coupled to the cable network and enables each RF transmitting channel to be selectively coupled to any of the RF receiving channels and also enables a particular subscriber location video RF broadband channel to be assigned to a subscriber location.

摘要: A method and system optimally selecting antenna elements based on the current availability of antenna elements and the current usage of other antenna elements within a two or three dimensional array. The present system and method pertain to an approach to allow the maximal usage of each antenna element while simultaneously reducing the coupling between antenna elements to improve the signal strength in each antenna element by ensuring that antenna elements in the same incident path are not tuned to the same frequency or physically or electrically near elements tuned to identical or adjacent frequencies.
